Fuck You, I'm from Texas
I'm sure someone else has already posted a rec thread for this before, but searching is a lot of work.
Anyways... I don't know when it happened, but at some point in my stay here at UM, I have become incredibly fond of folk metal... which I found to be a joke before. So give me some bands/albums to go get.

Temnozor - Horizons
Temnozor - Folkstorm of the Azure Nights
Pagan Reign - Tverd
Skyforger - Semigalls' Warchant
Skyforger - Kauja Pie Saules

edit:
oh, and the debut album from Kalevala if you like female vox and the Russian language. one of the best releases of 2008 IMO

Nokturnal Mortum - Weltanschauung
Nokturnal Mortum - Goat Horns
Sigrblot - Blodsband (Blood Religion Manifest)
Elvenking - Heathenreel
Ulver - Bergtatt
Helheim - Av Norrøn Ætt

turisas- battle metal
moonsorrow- pretty much anything
eluveitie- slania
einherjer- blot
korpoklaani- voice of wilderness
ensiferum- victory songs
tyr- ragnarok
bathory- hammerheart

for the record, alot of the previous recs are the darker pagan stuff, if you want the happier stuff, say so. theyre trying to be arrogant metal snobs by avoiding the jolly stuff that has come out over the last few years

YES

and i'll add: Turisas - The Vargarian Way
Ensiferum - Ensiferum
Svartsot - Ravnenes Sage
Stormlord - Mare Nostrum (Folk/Black etc)

where is Einherjar, im sure he could add a few good ones

a line needs to be drawn between viking, folk, heathen, and pagan metal.

when i think folk metal, i think skyclad, cruachan, waylander

pagan metal - primordial

moonsorrow calls their music heathen metal

viking metal - bathory, hades, helheim

shit metal - turisas

Most jolly folk metal is crap, really.

I'll stomach Korpiklaani and Finntroll occasionally because they're like drunken fun and they don't take themselves too seriously but bands like Moonsorrow, Ensiferum, Turisas etc are just tepid. I would rather listen to Amon Amarth, Primordial or Bathory or folk-influenced BM like Ulver or Belenos.

Windir- try their first three; I personally love 1184
Amorphis- Tales From the Thousand Lakes, Elegy, Tuonela, Eclipse, Silent Waters
Ancient Rites- Fatherland, Dim Carcosa
Falchion- Legacy of Heathens (if you like Ensiferum-esque stuff, you'll like Falchion)
Thyrfing- Vansinnesvisor
Tverd- Follow the Sun's Way

Also, I'd definitely reinforce the following:
Moonsorrow- I love all their material, but I think that Kivenkantaja is one of their best
Turisas- Battle Metal and The Varangian Way; awesome symphonic folk; if you don't mind excessiveness and extravagance, they're a great band
Skyforger- I've yet to get a record, I've only listened to songs, but they're great; just heed Cyth's post
Excelsis- also great; see Seditious' post
Mithotyn- again, see Seditious
Eluveitie- most people don't like them, I think they're good; I'd suggest Spirit over Slania, though
Nokturnal Mortum- Weltanschauung

thyrfing- urkraft
turisas- battle metal
moonsorrow- pretty much anything
eluveitie- slania
einherjer- blot
korpoklaani- voice of wilderness
ensiferum- victory songs
tyr- ragnarok
bathory- hammerheart

I don't really know what exactly I'm looking for, I'm fairly new to the genre. I just heard some stuff off of last.fm. I'll probably check out most, if not all, of the bands here. I do know I like Korpiklaani (laughing at Wooden Pints is what got me listening to the genre in the first place), Ensiferum, Turisas, Eluvetie, and Bathory... But that's about as far as I've got in the genre.

Btw, thanks for the rec everyone.

Folk metal is too way wide to specify something. Despite the ridiculous names that some bands calls their music, on folk metal you can find this types IMO:

-Folk acoustic/ambiental:
Ulver's Kveldsjanger, Empyrium (the 2 last albums), October falls, Tenhi, Uaral, etx.

-Black metal with folk infuence (where the black metal infuence is prevalent):
Ulver - Bergtatt/Nattens Madrigal
Falkenbach's ...En Their Medh Riki Fara..
Kampfar's Fra Underverdenen/Kvass/Heimgang
Graveland
Borknagar's selftitled
Taake
Enslaved
Windir, etx

-Folk metal with black (or another extreme metal style)influence (folk >black/whatever): I identify here 2 categories:

'Happy folk metal' like Finntroll, korpiklaani, Folkearth, eluveitie, ensiferum, turisas, etx.

Melancholic folk metal like Vintersorg (Hedniskhjärtad, Till Fjälls and Ödemarkens Son mainly - can be considered Viking metal too), Agalloch, Empyrium (they mixed doom, black and folk on their 2 first albums), Primordial, etx

-Viking metal (I separate it cause the sound and the music structures usually are different)
Storm
Isengard
Otyg
Falkenbach, since...Magni Blandinn Ok Megintiri...
Bathory's Hammerheart
Kampfar's Mellom Skogkledde Aaser
Einherjer, etx

-Progressive folk/black/whatever:

Lastest Enslaved/Borknagar/Vintersorg
Tyr
Solefald

Asmegin is weird to clasify but they're great too.

note: Amon Amarth is NOT folk, nor viking metal at all.
