Luckily the local shop that's closest to me (little mom & pop type store) sells all the string brands, at cheaper cost than Sam Ash and GC I might add, in packs and in singles. Same goes for bass strings. You can break a brand new A string, go there, give them $0.75 and get a brand new one. Bass strings are $2.50 each for the most expensive brand, the cheapest I've seen in singles is like $1.25.
Forgot you were a fello SA-Towner. It's Century Music off of Nakoma. Take the Nakoma exit off of 281, if going north you'll take a left at the light and if going south you take a right (obviously) and you'll go down to the first light and take a left. Then you go down that street and it'll do this wierd triple fork type thing, stick to the left, and it's like the second building on that street once you get on it. The parking lot is wierd and kinda sucks, as in it's wierd to get in/out of.
Holy shit, I completely forgot about their string prices... got my first acoustic guitar and amp there, took lessons with a guy there, used to buy stuff there all of the time, and I haven't been there since it moved from Thousand Oaks. Looks like I get to try new tunings...
It was tuned to F. I'm not too sure about the string gauge though. I play a .60 on my guitars (tuned to B) and it felt about the same or maybe a little thinner than that.
I really think that the scale needs to be longer to correct the lack of string tention not just using thicker stings. Maybe even up to 30" scale.
Goddamnit, that's a fifth below what I play with .70s...
On that note, Mnemic's newest is on a seven-string tuned down a fourth, anyone know what they use in that? Similar enough to the 8-string issue, it's only a note off...
- Ovangkol body with a French Ash Top
- 35-inch scale, 24 fret, Ovangkol neck with a Wenge fingerboard
- Tuned F#, B, E and A (The F# is a massive .175 gauge!)
- Active MEC TJ /J Pickups
- Active MEC 3-band Preamp
- Black Hardware
- Special Sand-blasted finish for killer texture
- Warwick security strap locks
Really? For a pack of Ernie Ball Slinkies (10-46) I can get out of there for $5 even. At Hermes/Guitar Center and Sam Ash they are more than that. I dunno if I'm getting a hookup or what. I have spent a good amount of money there and my friend works there...so I dunno. A lot of their stuff is higher, like instruments, PA's, mics, amps...but strings and cables I've always gotten cheaper than other places.
I forget, but somewhere there was a guy that makes 6's or 7's. I'd like to grab some of those and tack a high A (Or at least G) on in place of the low F#...even though I do tune down to that neighborhood occasionally, I think I'd rather the extra high notes so I'm not so reliant on the whammy pedal.
