Finally, a band (other than Galneryus) that does this right!

sorry, apparently it hates me.

Ah yes, great band! I love their videos! Interestingly though, they are only considered Visual Kei because of their image.. their music has nothing resembling the genre. They're straight-up Japanese Power Metal that's using VK as a schtick. Whatever, I like my two worlds colliding and creating a bastard child that actually rocks harder than Janne Da Arc! :heh: ...But do you really think Galneryus is the only other good Visual Kei band out there? :zombie: You can't be serious..

Edit: Here, you can't tell me these bands are doing it wrong  j/k j/k
BLOOD - "Sweetest Diesease"
Phantasmagoria - "Lost in Thought"
and of course I shouldn't have to bring up Moi dix Mois :heh:

These guys remind me so much of Raphael, which makes me very sad. :( What a great band that was.
I can definitely see the X Japan/Luna Sea/Malice Mizer/Due le quartz influence though.

The new generation of fans has really left a lot of the old stuff behind and forgotten and it's so nice to see/hear something like this that I like. (It's been a damned long time...)

I must admit that my fascination w X-Japan has nothing to do w their image, but rather their music and their lyrics. I still believe that "Art Of Life" is one of the best songs EVER written, musically and conceptually.

Versailles comes close to X-Japan's earlier music in that song you posted, but the vocalist is totally horrible.

The other bands, Raphael, Blood, Megamasso etc don't interest me at all, and only the Phantasmagoria track is pretty good (although musically it's more like mid-period Paradise Lost meets To/Die/For).

OMGOMGOMG I so have to disagree with you though. A loooot of early VK bands did the power metal (or similar enough) thing. VK is ALL about the visual style and whatever kind of music you want. Gawd I can think of about a half-dozen musical styles from major VK bands in just the last four or five years. What you do see though is bands imitating the bands that came before them (more noticeably than any other genre of music, I'd argue)...just look at all the current/new VK bands that are ripping off Dir en grey and Miyavi...it's disgusting.

The beautiful thing about music in Japan is that you can have a band that puts out straight up rock songs, punk songs, metal songs, whatever you want...all from the same band! And people love it!

To be honest, I don't like many of the new VK bands very much. Musically many of them don't do anything for me. I've seen BLOOD and Candy Spooky Theater live recently and I gotta say, there really wasn't a lot of music at those shows. Pre-recorded drums (well, i knew that going in) and pre-recorded backing EVERYTHING (keyboards, bass parts, guitar parts) and it was pretty annoying. And they were playing Telecasters (ick!). That said. I enjoy the albums. Go figure.

Great Raphael song. Here's the other I was thinking of:

Holy crap, forgot a great one:

Oh yeah, there are totally bands with different genres that use VK as their gimmick, I'm not denying that. I'm putting Versaille in that group. But with so many of the "metal" bands there is a certain "sound" that seems to go along with the look too. Dir en Grey and Malice Mizer sum it up, but I can go further with Vidoll, Pierrot, Kagrra, Phobia, Aliene Ma'raige, Antique Café, Beata, Cure, et al. Anyway...

I CAN'T believe you got to see BLOOD! :notworthy That is so cool! Even if there wasn't a lot of live music being performed, was the visual display worth it? Candy Spooky Theater is not one of my favorites though.

"Eternal Wish" was the first Raphael Song I was going to add!! It's my favorite :D

Just the thread i was looking for!
surprised Sex Machineguns hasn't been mentioned yet.

That's because their first two CDs were their best (in that order, even) and the following 10+ were an incredibly lackluster effort....and that's coming from a guy who owns all of them.

Anchang's entire band has left him (YET AGAIN) otherwise I would be kicking and screaming to get them for the Pre-Party because...in all honesty...they're too ridiculous not to have to a show here (They did a couple of gigs in Tennessee around '00-'02ish IIRC). I haven't bothered to check out "Elleguns" yet but *shrug* who knows?

I couldn't agree more. An absolute masterpiece! My two favorite songs are Art of Life by X-Japan and Carry On by Angra.
