Logical editor (for programming drums) and 'Merge Tempo from Tapping' function (for constructing tempo maps from scratch guitar/drums) kill! Even more so when used in conjunction.

That is all :headbang:

Yep, at least they have that one part in which they excel at. I've known about those features for quite some time, but it's only now that they actually saved my ass (obvious reason - a shitty band  )

But this re-discovering has made me think. I figure that tracking this way and then editing 100% on grid could sound pretty human, unlike when you do that the 'traditional' way (in which even slipping hits a few ms ahead/behind the grid doesn't give you wanted results, at least to me).
I'll try it anyway when I get a chance. Maybe that's a really good way to make the final product sound both, tight and natural.

Anyway, I like this feeling of (re)discovering stuff

edit:Loren, fucking...(look at your title and the title of this thread, could it be by accident?)

There's also the midi plugin called "Midi Modifiers" for that (very simple).

I'll check if the logical editor have something more, I'm not used to that feature.
Thank you ;)

Yeah, I've tried that at some point, but somehow haven't got useful results. (also, by using that modifiers in Inspector IIRC you can see changes you done on the track only when you import/export it)
With LE you can see it happening, plus you can edit whatever the selection of notes you want (for example 2 bars of just kicks with one setting, and on the snare you can apply other settings, etc.), while with midi modifiers you affect the whole midi track.

LE is all kinds of \m/

Amazing, sounds like a more flexible and offline midi modifier !
You're right that the real time thing is not really an advantage, and it's a bit annoying because I always have to split my drums midi track too (1 kick/snare , 1 toms, 1 cymbals) to use different paramaters.

I have to put my hands on this logical editor, thanks again dude :headbang:

Use this all the time for drums, wack guitar pro MIDI in, delete program changes and volume changes in list editor, logical editor - randomise velocity 109-117 or there abouts, logical preset to boost velocity on every beat modified to boost about 10. Really helps with the humanisation. MIDI Quantize random quantize about 6 ticks gets rid of machine gun effect. All in all pretty winning although still not really anything like a real drummer to my ears. I think you need to get into things like pushing the beat in faster sections and holding it back in the rest, anyone got any more insight into this?

Of course that having the LE is not enabling you to just set-and-forget your midi drum track, it still needs 'manual' work. I experiment with velocity and position randomizing. For ex. in the slow parts, my velocity/position range is bigger comparing to the fast parts. Also, I find that having bigger variation/range on cymbals pretty much anywhere helps. As for pushing/holding the beat - just listen/watch to some multitrack recordings if you have the chance, or some actual records.

For me, the biggest part, along with dynamics, why live drummer sounds like he does is because of those little variations in speed. So that's why I think that this option in Cubase of making a click track out of real performance could really yield good results in that respect.
Because, even if you are really tight, you are still not tight like the machine, so if you are making the click track out of say a tight scratch guitar track, the resulting grid will not be as 'perfect' as the grid we have in our DAWs.

So, maybe you haven't a live drummer at your disposal, but you still have you (if you are a guitar/keyboard player/etc.) to provide that pushing and pulling. Maybe it is not as good as the actual drummer, but it certainly is better than having just your VSTi pounding with velocity set at 127 all the time, exactly on the grid :)

thanks so much for this tip on using the logical editor to randomise the velocity of MIDI drum hits within a specific range. Just applied that to some midi drums in a new track which i'm working on and it worked a treat!! :)

can you explain a little more about boosting the velocity of every beat modified by 10? not sure what you mean by this.

thanks!!
