Is anyone else amazed by the artistic value of the album covers?

I'm not 100% in love with the heavy underground metal.

But I appreciate the murals and landscapes depicted on album covers.

Anyone else agree?

I love the artwork on many an underground metal album. For one, I am a huge fan of artwork by Kristian Wahlin, who did the covers of such masterpieces as Emperor's "In The Nightside Eclipse" and Wintersun's s/t album. I also like many of the paintings by H.R. Giger and some by whoever did the cover of Malevolent Creation's "Retribution", his name escapes me.

yeah, Wåhlin is a beast.

if a band is shit but the artwork is great, then the band is shit.

i like when they use old paintings, for example,

Arghoslent's Incorrigible Bigotry with Thomas Cole's "Destruction".

Mefisto's first demo with Eliphas Levi's "Baphomet".

Bathory's Blood Fire Death by Peter Nicolai Arbo's "The Wild Hunt of Odin - Åsgårdsreien"
and Hammerheart's "A Viking's Last Journey" by Sir Frank Dicksee.

GBK albums artwork of Jesus with no eyes are always fun.

but i also like artists like Kris Verwimp. Skrymer from Finntroll.

and others.

Depends on my mood. Sometimes I appreciate a level of intricate detail, sometimes I prefer simplistic, almost non-existent visualisations of music. I can't see that there is any consistency in my taste, other than I really hate "cheesiness".

But to the point, yes I appreciate coverwork, in general.

I always liked the look of Darkthrone's emblem on their album covers.

Since alot of those bands have come from the Scandinavian (sp?) Peninsula, I'm guessing they have a lot of forests there and stuff? I liked the morbidity of the dark, ambient forests on some of the covers.

Especially the cover of Panzerfaust.

Yeah there's some frickin intense stuff on album covers
it'd probably take forever to create for the artist
Totally not heavy metal band from the good ol' days "Steppenwolf" had some pretty intense album artwork on their LP's

I like covers that resemble bleak landscapes or some kind of underworld domains. I like the covers that look like something you would want to see in real life.

^ I agree, my favorite album cover is probably this one
