YOB - Catharsis
Review by: Rob Wrong (StonerRock.com)
Abstract Sounds LTD
Release date: Available Now

I got an early version of this CD when it was still in demo mode from Mike, the mastermind behind the 'YOB' sound and knew it was going to be great in the final product stage, but I had no idea it would be this good...at first I thought it was a totally different recording, but after listening to it, I've come to realize that it's just got a proper mix and master job...and man, the final production job is nothing short of awesome.

Now, if you haven't heard YOB before, you don't know what you are missing. Easily one of my favorite stoner rock bands out there. These guys play the Green Matamp stacks much in the way Sleep and High on Fire do...all the way up.

These three tracks on this CD are epic masterpieces. The album opens with Aeons, which clocks in at an amazing 18+ minutes. Every song on this CD is a journey through thick riffs and mountains of fuzzed out doom. Aeons starts out with just guitar and bass down low, and when it kicks in on full volume, watch out. YOB is definitely a mean force to reckon with and Aeons is nothing short of brilliant. The vocals of Mike Scheidt are so damn good, that if you haven't heard of YOB, you will be wondering why and kicking yourself in the ass for not. He switches from falsetto Rob Halford type vocals to death metal growls on the drop of a dime.

Track 2 on Catharsis is 'Ether', and is one of the more upbeat songs that you will hear out of the entire YOB catalog. It's full of energy and has mean busy riff after riff of pummeling goodness. This song would probably floor the guys in High on Fire, and will probably floor most of you more so than any song on Surrounded by Thieves. Again this is a long doom drenched journey, and has a break in the middle that really gets groovy and soulful with deep seated blues guitars leads that will make any guitar player drop to their knees in awe. Just awesome and again, nothing short of brilliant.

Now if that wasn't enough, the title track Catharsis is the icing on the cake, if not the cake itself. It clocks in at a monstrous 23+ minutes and outdoes in my opinion Sleep's Jerusalem on so many levels. Now don't get me wrong, Sleep is one of my favorite bands of all time, but Jerusalem can be a bit tiring and trying on your patience where as Catharsis has many more parts, and really doesn't bore you with the same riff over and over again throughout. This song really ends up in a completely different planet than Earth by the time the journey is over...now I don't want to spoil every song on this CD for you, so I will just say that the long intro is pretty, melodic and climatically loud, and the end is downright fucking mean and loud, period.

I can't express enough how good YOB is, and if you think that I am just saying all of this because these guys are my friends and they are from Oregon as well, then you are an asshole because these guys are just so good it's hard to deny it. If you are a fan of Sleep, Bongzilla, High on Fire and Electric Wizard, then this is a MUST HAVE PERIOD. YOB will soon be a household name as far as I am concerned and forever be one of the greatest doom bands in the history of the genre in my book. There I said it, now go listed to YOB and prepare to be enslaved to them for the rest of your life, trust me on this one. This is hands down one of the most passionate and heavy albums of all time.

I'm thinking about getting Pantheist. I just discovered them thanks to www.doom-metal.com.

Also, you should check out Monolithe. Here are two clips from the album "Monolithe I" which is one 52 min doom track. To bad I can't find this album anywhere.

And if you haven't heard Forgotten Tomb, check out the album Springtime Depression. Early Katatonia mixed with black metal. Cant' wait for RedStream to get this title in! Reviewed at http://www.metalreview.com/albums/default.aspx?album=546
