For those who are using Logic 8

I'm on my second week of using it seriously recording bands - here is what I have to share so far:

  • Quick Comp - A great idea, however even with the update for Logic it still seems quite buggy and quite a few times I have had regions of audio move forwards or back (and to move them back is very long winded). Once this is sorted it will be the tits.
  • This and perhaps this (when I try it) seem to be good methods for quantizing drums. I have used the first method just now with decent (if not painfully slow) results. describing the first method quite well.
  • Changing the panning law from -3 compensated to -3 marked a noticeable improvement in my mixing when using logic pro 8.
  • Using Logic Pro 8 on my new 8-core machine is incredible - never experienced anything like this.
  • Logic Studio is a great deal if you are a student (paid £118)
  • I'll update this when my brain recovers from the 2 and a half hours I have spent editing drums for one song....

logic 8 is pretty cool.
might get it for composing and fucking around with...
To be honest; every time i speak to a logic user and say... So.. How do you edit drums then?
they look at me like they're about to cry

The tab to transient rip off is actually pretty good, just way too sensitive at the moment so you have to shift+left a couple of times before you get it right. As soon as the bugs are ironed out this will definitely keep me happy.

For the price I think you get some awesome synths, the EXS24 sampler which is incredible, and a ton of decent stock plugins (EQ matching, convolution verb, very good delays, linear phase EQ, etc).

For the price there is no other software right now that matches what you get with Logic. How many loops did you get...and virtual instruments...etc.

I was reading a thread over at Gearslutz about how they are pissed off at Apple support and there not being an update for a while. I have a hunch that Apple is going to do a big update to the program. I don't really know why. I guess because so many people are pissed about several features being buggy and being non-existent as well. Might be cool if they added a time stretch or audio warp esque function.

can't you do the same thing in logic 7?

i mean i've been doing the same thing minus the quantizing and the tab to transient. but the group channels saved my life when i discovered them. can someone confirm???

Hold down Option, move the mouse to the right bottom corner of the region, then the trim tool's function turns into TCE.

o rly now?

Did not know that.

I really think if Apple clears out the kinks in Logic and adds a beat detective type thingy it will be one hell of an app. It is nice now but those two things would be huge.

logic 8 is very nice. thanks so much for these videos! i have not tried the techniques yet but they look awesome.

Lasse - Logic 8 is a lot more refined and easy to use compared to previous versions. Out of all the programs I have used I think Logic is probably the most similar to Cubase in terms of workflow etc.

If you get the chance to try it out, do it. Having said that, if you are happy with what you are using I'm not sure what you will gain.....

ive just bought it but wont instal in on my main machine yet until Ive played with it a bit more.. Also dont want to up grade during a session to find that I dont know how to do the most simple things but so far Im impressed. Well to be honest I was impressed enough when I saw the time stretch thing

I actually switched back to my Logic 7 cause they changed to much.

The fact that you can't copy settings between songs via the audio config that you can in 7, made me switch back.

But it is probably good. I'm just to biased to the 7. Still love it.

I just bought Logic 8 a couple weeks ago. I'm still learning it. I'm disappointed the orchestral string section in some of the loops isn't in the sampler or any of the synths, 'cause it's great, but outside of that... There's nothing that comes close to what you get in terms of content. It's all good, usable stuff, too. (Admittedly I haven't tried the amp simulator for anything other than roughing up some samples, but I'm not buying serious DAW software for the amp sim.)

is that tab to transient function available in logic 7??? i tried doing the shift+LEFT/RIGHT and it was selecting regions which i believe is the default key command for shift+directional key.

that sucke because it would make my life easier. there is also the global tempo map thing which is another shortcut but i never quite got the graps of it. however that video looked cool i wish logic 7 had the ability to "tab to transient"
