I tried. I gave it a full honest listen. I don't think I would do it again though.
Yea, it has to be your sub genre of metal for your to enjoy it......It's the same way I would never listen to death metal....

It's just a level of cheese I couldn't get over. I mean, I would love to see Gloryhammer at ProgPower, so it's not like I don't dive into some occasional cheesy power metal. This was too much for me. Maybe it's the vocals...just not working for me.
I've had a tough time with the latest Stratovarius disc as well, and most people seemed to like it as well.
What's your comparison of it to their previous discs? The new one reminds me of a mix between Helloween's "Keeper of the Seven Keys" and Gamma Ray's "Land of the Free".......
With the early Freedom Call discs I had a big problem with the annoying high whiney vocals, and they have all but disappeared on this new one as he seems to be singing in a lower register and his vocal range is much more developed.....
Yea, I totally get where you are coming from... Although I still wonder what the exact definition of "cheese" is? LOL... I mean, what makes something "cheesy" when it comes to music? is it the fantasy aspect? Like Dragons? etc?
Yeah, that's a tough one. I mean, I don't know how over the top you can get than something like Powerwolf, but I have little problem with them; so it can't just be the lyrics. I'll even listen to some of the xtian based bands, like Theocracy, and enjoy that from time to time. Or Ghost, and I was a die hard Rhapsody fan for a lot of years, so it's not just unicrons, trolls, elves, dragons, etc... I'm even down some good geek metal, like Slough Feg. I'm like the biggest Aryeon fan as well. No problem with happy metal either. Something about Freedom Call just pushes my bounds.
Luckily there is a ton of great music out there.
I'd consider Freedom Call to be cheese, not because of the music, but because of the lyrics. And not because the lyrics are happy, but because they often aren't saying anything and they use ridiculous turns of phrase. I think the awesomeness factor of this band would go even higher if they let someone edit their lyrics. Of course, I suspect they are doing it on purpose. Chris Bay's command of English seems way too solid for him to be singing "Bang Bang for a big time." If you handed Jorn Lande those lyrics he'd probably skin you alive.
