Fuck!

I don't use tabs too much, atleast anymore. Maybe if I'm writing a shitload of riffs and parts and need to keep them all in order or something.

Sometimes tabs are useful though. But I prefer to just evolve myself instead of studying all sorts of songs written by other people.

Though I've used my share of tabs before.

I mainly use tabs to figure out things hard to hear in the mix. Anyone can figure out a riff, but it's the subtleties that I need the tabs for.

Same, and for some really "out there" leads if I can't figure them out by ear, e.g. of the Marty Friedman variety.

I need tabs because I'd rather spend my time figuring out my OWN songs. Learning someone else's song is a challenge, but it shouldn't require you to waste time when you could be building upon your own catalog of material. Learning stuff by tab could give you alternative ways to play things, and if a band tabs their stuff, it could open your eyes to how it should be properly played, this way you can learn techniques that the actual artist used upon writing and recording the song. I'd say that sure beats figuring something out by ear and trying to play something more difficult than it was intended.

All fair points, Will. But it's good for the ear to figure stuff out, if done succesfully, and can then be checked over on a genuinely inerrant tab and/or standard notation (like I did with 'Tornado of Souls' and 'Mr. Crowley', among others). Granted, it can prove time-consuming and patience-driving, thus, tab can be a healthy and worthwhile cop-out.

This is true... I just have different priorities. I'm not really concerned with working on my ear, because when I'm writing music by myself, I don't need to try to figure out anything... same thing goes with when I'm in a band. I have them tab it out and give it to me. *shrugs*

slave driver  I give them the tabs for stuff I write, too. it's a musical reach around. as long as they fuck me in the ass with difficult music, reach around and at least show me how it's done :tickled:

That exactly right there is why I use tabs. If I have to try and figure the rhythm out then I'll do it, but if I've got a good sounding tab to use then I'll stick with that. But as far as solos go, I just don't have the patience to work on figuring out licks and all that, and I don't know if I even could. All the time I could take doing that I'd rather work on my writing.

oh fuck off. tabs are an amazing way to understand the basics that make genres of music.

I usually tab out the songs I write just in case something happens and I need it for reference, besides, our other guitarist is not as good and needs the tabs.

I whole-heartedly agree with Will. I'd rather bust my balls working on my own tunes than someone else's, when I can easily go online, find their tabs, and be finished in an hour or so, depending on the song.

Besides, who plays songs exactly like the original, anyway? The rhythm, yes, but you should incorporate your own ideas to improve upon what someone else has already done. Ever hear a song and anticipate an ass-kicking riff or lick in a certain place, only to be somewhat disappointed? Well, tabs are a great way of getting the basic structure down and then incorporating your own style in it. Unless you're in a cover band, who wants to play a cover note for note just like the original? How boring...
