Force of habit but it goes back to the old days of electronic signatures.

People would put their initials at the end of an email instead of signing it, then some would just initial their first name to save on keystrokes. I use lower case to save me pressing two keys.

If you delve further back there was a time when you could not use capital letters in emails, (possibly the same with programming) for some reason it just didn't compute.
