I am curious to hear how do you imagine the "trend" in the "metal art" in the future? I think soon all the digital art will be replaced by good 'ol hand made paintings:) Too many people do "art" nowdays... all you need is good ram and photoshop... and here we go...

I think traditional media and digital media will melt much more together.
Use traditional digitally (scan) or use digitalprints as "Canvas" and work on that.
Its fun to sketch and paint with oil on some printed artwork you did digitally.
You should try :)

I always use sketches, paintings or photos as structures and elements in my digital works.

cheers,
chris

Well, I've seen a lot of crappy paintings AND crappy digital covers.
I think if the idea is good it doesn't matter how it's done, although, certain methods are better suited to different things. I like the "realistic" feel of certain photographic things, and the 'organic' feel of painted things. I guess it is easier these days to get noticed if you have Photoshop, a website, and a friend in a band. I do however think that one day it might be oversaturated with (obvious) photoshop covers, and if that happens people might go back to traditional methods for awhile for something "fresh". Traditional is always good. But I think if you can do something different enough, there's always room for everyone.

Right now the trend is for the photoshop covers. It's all about ebb and flow. Like trav said, once it's oversatured with photoshop art something new will come to the front. I myself prefer drawings and paintings, but some of this digital work looks really nice.

And it's not like if you have photoshop you can do a cover. You still need creativity as well as a grasp of the medium you're working in. Anyone can do it, sure. But anyone can also paint a painting or do a drawing.

I think it is a matter of individual style and originality. Go to any record store with a "Metal" section and look around. Every single cover looks like Travis made it, simply because everyone wants to create the same style artwork for metal albums. It puts a big fucking smile on my face to see artwork like th last two Anathema albums because it wasn't "Travis Smith" style. The early 90's had "Tiamat - Wildhoney" type paintings and we now have Travis and his imitaters. We'll see what happens next... because really, if the band is happy and the album rocks, who cares who did the cover and what it looks like, right??? :)
