Chris,

I don't know if I've ever asked you this, but do you use any effects pedals in front of your ENGL? I know you have a processor, but I wasn't sure if you used that in conjunction with your amp head. I just scored an old green tubescreamer ts-10 from my room mate and I think I'm going to start using it.

Also, the pictures on the gear page are really small, do you or Zac have any bigger pics?

Thanks!

Hey metalgtr84,
I am not using any effects right now. Just me, the guitar and my amp. However I have my eye on this new T.C Electronics G-system for my live rig, it looks sweet.
Chris.

Guess that answers my question...lol, ok now I look like a maroon for that award winning question!

BTW am saving up the $$$ currently to pick up a Powerball with two Vintage 30 cabs, one slant one straight!

Hey Dischord,
I recommend getting a 4x12 with G12h 30's instead of Vintage, IMHO they sound more complex, are smother in the treble, and record better. I just got and Avatar 4x12 with them and can't believe my ears. Also the Avatar cabs are only $388 with them and are built really well. The only thing you have to get over with those cabs are that they are small when campared to a Marshall.
Take care, Chris.

My financial situation sucks ass right now, so I've been thinking about getting a Powerball and a 2x12 cab.. I could get a Marshall TSLC212 for about 500 euros.

The Guitar I mainly use is a ESP KH-2 sig guitar.
I took out the EMG and replaced them with a Seymore Duncan SH6 for the bridge and a Jazz for the neck position. It sounds more vivid now.
The amp is the ENGL Powerball.
The speaker is a ENGL XXL celestion 30 vintage. it has a great sound very transparent and a great bass fundament!!!
The only effect is a Dunlop Cry Baby- the classic model. But that will change eventually, when I built up my rack system... Petrucci uses a rack whah...
I plan buying the T.C. Electronic G- Major as next step.

But then I have a question to those who now something about racks:
Is it good to use a pre-amp? because I need more settings for gain than the basic Powerball offers (gainsettings for: clean, different crunsh sounds, different rhythm and different solo sounds)
so how do I achieve that? With a pre-amp or are there other ways?

Maybe someday, but I can tell you that I used rack gear for years, and only now realized how much my tone sucked compared to a head.
Chris.

Hm, but the engl E 530 preamp has a bypass function, so that i can use only the head tone. i just want to have a wider source of sounds and the only effects i would use is the g-major...and my cry baby
i read nothing but good things about this preamp on:

http://www.harmony-central .com/Guitar/Data/Engl/E530_Preamp-01.html

i trust in engl so i would buy only their preamps, because the tone of all engl amps i have heard is great (fireball, powerball, savage) so why not use this preamp?

another question is how to set it up, but i will see when i test how my current, and the gear, that i consider to buy, sounds together next week in our local store... http://www.musicstore.de

Pre-amps can be very kool. I understand that some guyz don't like them as much as heads, I'll go either way personally, but I mean the kool thing about preamps is you get that companies tones for a pretty small price compared to some heads. Just have a good power amp and you can have a bunch of kool preamps that you can switch back and forth. I really love midi preamps, because of the tone flexabiltiy, I mean with a midi switch you can have so many tones with different effects one each one and so forth. Right now I actually am using a kh-2, modded usa jackson soloist, and Ibanez jem 7dblk, with a jmp1 preamp and a vht 2:90:2 power amp, and I must say I love it. If you really want to see a great tone from a preamp/poweramp seperate setup, check out www.marcelcoenen.com, he's using a jmp1 with a mesa boogie 295 power amp, he's incredible and his sound rules.

BTW- Although I love preamps, I really in the future want to get a really badass head like an engl savage, vht pitbull ultralead, or a mesa boogie roadking, man that would rule, but I don't really have the money right now.

For any Powerball users, what settings do you use. Recently I have left the bottom switches out with the Depth Punch up full. Incidently has Chris posted his settings before.

Well, what do you know...
My 1976. Marshall cab has exactly those speaker inside. ;)
Now I just have to gather some cash for an ENGL head. :ill:

Damn, I've been listening fairytales about those cabs for years now, how good and cheap they are, but it seems no one in Europe stocks them... :erk:
I'd really like to try one.

I love the convenience of rack gear as well. I have had ove the years:
Mesa studio quad pres, ADA MP-1 and 2's, Roland GP-16, Sans Amp PSA-1 (one of the best in my opinion), JMP-1, Tiaxis, and a few other off brands that I don't remember, for my preamp (I havn't treid any of the ENGL pre's so they could be awesome). Then I even used a GNX-2 for a while to tour live and record. I can't wait for the day when Digital amp modeling sounds as good or better than a Head, and we can just email the sound guy a program to load into the sound console.

I'm tired of huffing gear around, Ahahaha, Chris.

LOL. Same here dude, I think there actually will be a time when the digital amp modeling will sound just as good or better than tubes. I hate it when tubes burn out, and you can't really do shit about it unless you got some spares on hand. I special ordered some tubes recently for my vht power amp, and man I've had to wait 2 weeks so far, it's killin me. :yell:
