Gamma Ray greatest power metal ever????

Gamma Ray is up there. Been listening to Heading For Tomorrow a lot lately, and although quite cheesy, its still great. Gotta love Ralf Scheepers.

Helloween took themselves out of the running when they released Chameleon and Pink Bubbles. I admit to liking both albums, but still...

i would say yes, they definitely rock, but would have to agree that even with the quality releases, they are not a very innovative band. It's really been the same formula and idea since it started.

I'm not so sure... I'd judge that by the first band I think of when someone says, "Show me your best example of power metal." I would think, I dunno... um... I'd probably pull out Edguy's Theater of Salvation, or Kamelot, or DEFINITELY Angra. I suppose....hmm...

Damnit why'd I read this thread? Now I'm thinking of the one band in my collection that most perfectly describes the genre... I've got work to do today!

I have have to ask my self what is the greatest power metal album of all time. For me it would be a toss up between Helloween's Keepers 1 & 2. Therefore my answer would be Kiske/hansen era Helloween.

Gamma Ray and Edguy picked up the tourch and carried it but I am not sure that either has done anything that is as good as The Keepers 1 & 2. Close but not equal.

Yes Fates Keepers 1 and 2 are probably 2 of the greatest releases ever in power metal genre but Helloween did have Chamelon and Pink Bubbles that overall where horrible! Overall career not just their greatest but overall.

My argument would be that Helloween has done more for the genre with those two albums than all of Gamma Rays albums put together. To me, that defines greatness. Grant it, I am not a fan of modern day Helloween. To me, Helloween died after Keepers 1 & 2.

While they are one of the greatest, I dont think they are the greatest. For me personally the album that defines Power Metal is "Something Wicked This Way Comes" by Iced Earth. The album truly has everything on it.

I have to agree with this. I love Gamma Ray, Blind Guardian, Edguy and the rest but Helloween's Keepers 1&2 defined power metal.

Yeah rightttttttt! Have you heard the pop on their latest? I don't think you can consider the greatest to have music like that amongst their collection, my opinion. I much prefer Iced Earth, Brainstorm, Symphorce, Kamelot, Angra type power metal to those that you listed...

Bear

Seconded, though I'd add Manticora and Persuader to that list. :headbang:

Gamma Ray are a fantastic band but dont forget...they were heavily influenced by SCANNER!!!!!! Hypertrace is easily one of the most influencial power metal albums. I just relistened to it this weekend and it is amazing to see how many bands took from them.

I'm sorry, I keep seeing this thread and thinking it says, "Gamma Ray GAYEST power metal ever????"

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

-Metal

(To make myself clear: I'm laughing at the title of the thread, not making fun of anyone and their prefrences nor the band itself.)

Well that's better than reading the thread as, "Gayest Ray gayest power metal ever????" :loco:

I personally love Nightwish the most, but let' see with the new vocalist they get. Blind Guardian is a #2 for PM band. I reallly like Gamma Ray's Powerplant album but I haven't gotten into the other albums.
