I know this is probably more or less tempo-based but I was curious as to how you guys go about using gates and 'muting' ringing on the OHs and specifically the ride. I always seem to have to reign in the ride quite a bit. Do you usually choke the tails off pretty hard or let them ring out? Style dependent?

I sometimes automate mutes on the ride channel when it's unused and I actually increase the sustain of the whole kit through the OH pretty often with parallel compression. I can't really see the benefit of gating it unless I want to do something weird and fucked up.

Never gated but sometimes I'll cut cymbal spots by hand so they're only there when the cymbals actually being played.
