1) Black metal is first and foremost defined by Black Metal Ideology. It MUST have to do with Satanism. All others can be labeled "black-influenced" but cannot claim the title of black metal.

2) Black metal is secondly defined by a specific sound. This sound is best defined by DMDS and early Darkthone (and the first two Burzum albums which were actually black metal) releases. The musical part is more flexible than the ideology. Because of this, bands like Deathspell Omega can still claim to be black metal because of their intensely orthodox Satanism.

3) Something cannot claim the tag of "black metal" unless it conforms to both of the above.

These are axioms of black metal. They are not to be questioned.

This explains why bands such as Ondskapt and Watain deserve this title.

This also explains why Burzum's Hvis Lyset Tar Oss & Filosofem are not black metal (inconsistency in ideology).

This also explains why Borknagar, Enslaved, Forest Stream, Agalloch, Wintersun are NOT black metal.

since there will always be people who disagree, I will not argue this further, however it is imperative that I point this out, that there is an unquestionable orthodoxy in the concept of true black metal that must not go unignored.

No one questions whether or not Graveland is black metal and Rob Darken completely rejects any usage of satanism. Therefore your ideological argument is worthless.

I think its fucking hilarious how serious black metal fans get about this shit. Maybe that's why I have so little respect for the majority of this genre? Or maybe its this:

Hey, I'm just stating the facts, whether I personally agree with it or not is a whole different issue.

I don't understand how this is such a difficult concept to grasp that a genre must be defined by a sound as well as an ideology.

It seems that it's quite understandable with "Viking Metal" as defined as a sound AND ideology (but not to be confused with NSBM), but as soon as the idea of orthodox "Black Metal" comes in as a definition people go a run in corners and cry for some reason. It's the strangest phenomenon. I have seen it from day one on internet forums in black metal discussions, and I fail to see why this concept is so difficult to grasp since it's clear that they easily make such distinctions in other genres, but God forbid if someone limits black metal to an ideological prospective.

Perhaps I should have been more specific. Graveland is anti-Christian in their beliefs and music, as all black metal bands are and should be. That doesn't necessarily mean Satanism and can mean a variety of different things. That goes for all the pagan black metal bands as well.

Especially as they're the same religion.

Yes, I suppose they are aren't they? In about a thousand years, when Christianity and all its monotheistic counterparts have been disposed of (ha! I wish), God and Satan will just be looked at like Zeus and Hades in the same faith. Also, I'm sure the people of the future will manage to screw up and throw in a prominent character in our society that doesn't belong. They'll be teaching their little future children about how Spongebob Squarepants saved the world.
