Getting that Killswitch/Shadows Fall Sound

Hello: I wanted to ask how one would achieve that tone on home recordings in pro tools? What recording techniques to try, plugins, mixing tips, eq settings,etc. related to achieve these sounds. Please forgive me as I am new to DAW recording and can't seem to find out what people are doing for those all out pummelling tones and have them not come out muddy and with clarity.
Any and all advice very much appreciated! I'm using a Mac Pro with a digi 002R and have a dual recto with a Diezel 4x12 cab with front loaded v-30's.
