What Gibson calls "chambering" removes an awful lot of wood...
It will be lightweight (and probably fairly resonant), but I would be worried about an even softer attack on the notes and possible feedback issues at higher volumes.
Personally, I haven't played one, though. Can you try it first? It might seem like you're playing a hollowbody.

Hate the way the new "weight reliefed" les pauls sound. I would just scout out an older one that isn't.

My custom guitar has a chambered body and I LOVE the way it sounds, also for metal. Haven't had worse feedback problems than with any other guitar, if anything it's a bit quieter...
