10. dragon – fallen angel
as will be a common theme on this list, this is dark as pitch death/thrash with some serious schizo tendencies, rabidly twitching its way from one oddball riff to the next. I SPIT IN YOUR FACE!
9. obliveon – from this day forward
given its aesthetic, influences and mood this should really be a wainds all-timer and it never quite gets there. i think it's just a touch too abstract and alien to get me in the feels; i respond the same way i do to nespithe, an album it surely shares some DNA with in these strange fragmented riffs that almost seem like they were written backwards at times. i admire it greatly, but like a specimen through glass.
8. nuclear death - bride of insect
a horrific abomination not made for human consumption, so skincrawlingly demented and deranged it pretty much renders an entire sub-genre redundant.
7. despair – decay of humanity
underrated german prog-thrash that's broadly in the ballpark of deathrow and co. but can remind of everything from remnants-era helstar to obliveon. great understanding of how to maintain tension and cast a spell with its deliciously eerie mid-paced riffs and leads.
6. massacra – final holocaust
i have a renewed love for this over the past month, partly because my buddy kept insisting i recognise how good it is. he said it makes him visualise 'floating over a battlefield arms outstretched crucifixion style raining down fireballs on oncoming troops', which is a pretty good encapsulation of how badass it feels riding this unrelenting riff locomotive. it may not be what many purport it to be, but it is top tier riff-flinging thrash in the teutonic vein and shouldn't be dismissed just because its fanbase likes a mac bong now and again.
5. anacrusis – reason
contrary to the RYM ratings this fully realises the promise of the debut by leaning harder into its moodier, more introspective and progressive qualities. my hope is one day people will cast aside their preconceptions and appreciate these languid goth-tinged compositions for the primo existential thrash they are. besides, in between the brooding this still riffs like a motherfucker.
4. atheist – piece of time
in theory this album should be redundant in the wake of unquestionable presence, but in practice for any complexity or originality that's relatively dialled down they turn up the METAL. i love albums that manage to be cerebral and primal simultaneously, and this one fits that bill with these jagged jazzy compositions built around visceral riffage played at hurricane speed.
3. psychotic waltz – a social grace
no album from 1990 aims higher than this, and it manages to be great in a variety of different ways even if it over-reaches at times. objectively it may be the most worthy #1 out of the realistic options. my one gripe is that i wish there was a 45 minute version that included the excellent bonus tracks but excluded the more disposable stuff from the base/abridged album like 'in this place', 'strange' and 'i of the storm', as i find the definitive version a little exhausting at its current length.
2. sanctuary – into the mirror black
the likes of metal church and savatage tapped into this kind of bleak, tense, rigid, proto-thrashy trad metal sound half a decade earlier, but they arrived too early to fully escape the clichés of the previous era and the consistency (both tonally and qualitatively) suffered. here there are no such issues (aside from 'one more turd'), and to me this is the closest thing we have to a USPM equivalent of 2nd meets 4th album metallica minus any bloat, which is a big compliment coming from me. this is what iced earth fanboys like to believe iced earth are.
1. moral decay – to build an end
an unabashedly dramatic epic, equal parts personal and political, intimate and grand, vulnerable and violent. 'this god' deservedly gets the plaudits but i love every second of this as it twitches along in the throes of rage and anxiety. fitting that they'd release one scarred, scorched earth demo before slipping through the cracks, with half the band members long dead.
