...bands like Stratovarius, Gamma Ray, Iced Earth, Nevermore, Dream Theater...even if these guys were making more $ I don't see them changing. To be honest, if bands were making enough to live from with their music, consistently, they'd almost be cuckoo to change too much you know? It's when band revenue starts to decline that they have to decide what to do, forge ahead or change with the times. The fans decide how that plays out (purchase or not).
You're describing the problem with the industry. When the artist is influenced by consumer demand - either to change with the times, or to avoid changing and not alienate the customer base - the artist is constrained and the art suffers. The more dependent you are on the money that is made off of your music, the more it influences the decisions you make about your music; it's essentially inevitable. Therefore I feel any action (such as illegal downloading) that reduces the profit motive and makes music as a commercial product less feasible should be welcome.
