Just heard about this.. anyone got any info? From first looks it doesn't look like it'll be very good for audio, but its still early stages.

I've always thought that if Google was to release an OS or brand of computers they would probably just win everything. They have the simplicity and 'just works' of a Mac without all the pretentiousness and changing things just to be different (lets not start a Mac war though).

Hmm, interesting. I just thought that they're going to push Android for desktops and notebooks. This is also quite a minimalistic OS based on Linux.

Well if there's one company who might be able to get a Linux OS a breakthrough market share, it is Google. Which could be pretty neat even if you don't intend on using it because if it, in fact, reaches a certain market share it'll probably mean that more hardware suppliers will provide proper Linux support and drivers. Maybe... maybe...

Agreed, if any company is going to forge forward in this area it's Google. I really hope they take the reigns and start giving M$ and Apple something else to worry about.

However, this OS that they're doing seems to be fairly limited in application. We're probably a long way yet from when they'll try to tackle the big boys.

I for one, think this is kind of odd. its an odd OS. almost everything datawise is stored on the google cloud. i have an HTC Eric droid smarty fartfone, running android OS. google first off is a data collection company, they collect user data from their products (search, gmail, picasa, etc.) such as location, surfing habits, sms messages and sell it to third parties (doubleclick and adsense for example). and quite honestly i was naive to this when shopping for a device to feeed my info and streaming music fix while at work, I didn't even glance at the EULA until a couple of days ago.

according to google.com/dashboard (the 'product' they use to show us some of the 'aggregated' data they collect from us) they know who my best friend is, the girl i bang (its obvious from the msgs, and pics such), my shopping habits, all my contact info, all of my friends contact info, buisiness info, various GPS location data, pictures, music and it goes on and on. No, i am not being paranoid, or think google is out get me, but when reading the EULA in detail they are very vague when describing how they use this data, and how it will be shared among third parties. oddly enough, they call this their privacy policy. its odd that they redefine words in the policies to purposely deceive us. like redefining what 'aggregate data' is, one would think its general data collected from a number of possible sources, anonymously. not the case. i know that they 'only' use this info so they can tailor ads to us, and sell us products (manipulation for profit) - according to google. according to recently passed laws, this data MUST be stored on servers permanently just incase a governmental body needs to access it. i for one, do not think google has the right to be snooping into our lives the way they do. sometimes its like reading a census bereau survey, like "Why the FUCK would you need to know that kind of personal information for?" A: "oh, its nothing, just personalization".

it just seems odd, and this google os will only escalate the increasingly prying and violation of privacy these Big Balla co's are engaging in and sharing information with each other and huge advertisement firms. Aaaaaaand, this is legal. i know that once we click "i agree", you 'understand' these 'rights' of the EULA, and any and all liability, loss, or damage is at that point the user's problem and google isn't held accountable for anything, and if you don't like it, you do not use the product. not even an opt-out clause for those of us who'd rather not have our personal info used 'against' us for a buck. if any of us went around intercepting data on all of our neighbors and thier children, and random peoples personal information waving a EULA around, and offering some type of indexing service, we'd get fucked by the long dick of the law.

all this said, i believe might possibly be returning my Droid Eris to verizon, lol. but, after 2 weeks of use, they already know everything about me. does this creep anyone else out?

does this creep anyone else out?

yes and no.

yes... because I am thoroughly dissatisfied with the state our government is in and the fact that they could get a hold of personal info that I haven't given to them pisses me off to no end...

no because I like what I can do with my phone (G1)... and I'm not ready to live to life of a hermit and cut myself off from society so these things are bound to happen... to what extent will be decided by the hordes of retarded people who don't pay attention to whats going on with their government and so on and so forth... but this is a discussion for another... time/forum/thread... whatever.

Isn't the Chrome OS all web based anyway? Not sure how this would at all affect M$ or Apple aside from the iPhone, potential Apple tablet and Windows mobile.

Heh, judging from the videos it doesn't seem to be designed for anything like audio use, totally different market here.

It is centred around web applications but it's not primarily intended for mobile use, they already have Android covering this (which seems to be quite similar to Chrome OS).

And the Android introduction was rather successful, because it is head and shoulders above Windows CE and very much able to compete with Mac OS on the iPhone, while remaining to be open source.

At first glance, Chrome OS looks like an innovative OS with its streamlined, web-centred approach, seemingly rather targeted to a certain group of customers.

So you really wouldn't hold your breath for seeing a possible alternative OS coming up in the audio world...

BUT: Google are once again a step ahead of the competition. What you see with Chrome OS might seem rather gimmicky at the moment, but it's also very much the future of operating systems.

Microsoft has reportedly been working on such a "live OS" too for some time now and it has been rumoured that the Windows 7 successor will be the first step into this direction.

So while more and more applications change from being host-based to server-based, there will probably a point when DAWs will to.

This might seem like a total headache now and people are very much concerned about the security and privacy of their data, but it also opens up a whole new world for collaboration and effortless data storage and backup among other things.
