GoreGrind...

Devourment seem pretty good to me...

Hey peeps...y'know, I dunno if it's just me, but how do you guys define the line between brutal, grinding death metal and grindcore, or for purposes of this thread, goregrind?? I mean, how DO you seperate them? Is it purely lyrical? Because as far as I can hear, there's almost no difference between what some people call goregrind and what others call brutal death. How heavy and brutal does death have to be before it becomes just plain grind?

Exhumed, Disgorge, Devourment, Impaled......you call these bands goregrind and yet they very definately use insane death metal riffery here and there and some pretty technical rhythms.....sometimes. =) Is grind not plain blasting?
and KillWithPower's sample lyric; that's not your traditional gore lyric, that's closer to pornogrind lyrics....

where do we all draw the lines??

I know that some others have answered this as well, but here is my cut at it:

You are correct that the bands you listed above are very close in nature to everyday ultra-brutal death metal, but that is because, technically, they are not REALLY goregrind (with the possible exception of Disgorge, assuming you are talking about the Mexican Disgorge). They are more of a gore/death hybrid.

The purer strain of goregrind is infinitely more identifiable. It is usually sloppier, filthier and more underground. Bands that would fall under this heading would include the following:

AnalMassaker
Suppository
Retch
Lymphatic Phlegm
Ulcerrhea
Running Guts
Grossmember
Dahmer
Filth
Purulent Spermcanal
Dead Infection

and, of course, the greatest and perhaps the most "above-ground" goregrind bands of all---

REGURGITATE!!! Anyone wanting to listen to some truly out of control, filthy, repulsive goregrind that literally makes you feel like you must bathe after listening to it, go purchase Carnivorous Erection by Regurgitate. It RULES.

Just my two cents.

hahaha, i've seen the cover for Carnivorous Erection....it 'kin rules! one of the coolest covers ever.

So, given that pure grind/goregrind is so straightforward, sloppy, blasting and filthy....is there really any wealth of variation in the genre or do all the bands you listed pretty much play the same stuff, just with different production values??

That probably sounds REALLY naive....I mean, i'm a huge fan of brutal death and grinding death and I can imagine a melodic death metaller asking the same sort of thing as above concerning brutal death, and me thinking, obviously, that no way! there's loads of variation and scope in the genre!

but really....just how many truly different bands can you get playing grind and goregrind and porngrind etc etc????

Grind, goregrind, and pornogrind all sound pretty damned different, actually.

For example: Grind, having evolved from hardcore punk, has... well, generally, a metal-influenced punk feel. For example: Pig Destroyer (grind) as opposed to Lymphatic Phlegm (goregrind). They sound nothing like.

Now, pornogrind, in general, isn't very 'brutal' sounding at all. In fact, it generally relies on ultra-catchy, repetative riffs. Actually, it is a guilty pleasure of mine, because it is just so damned fun to listen to. In fact, if it wasn't for the repulsive vocals, most wouldn't sound very brutal at all. Now, compare Mucupurulent or Cock and Ball Torture (pornogrind) to Pig Destroyer (grind) and Lymphatic Phlegm (goregrind).

Then again, there are the true titans of gore/porn/noise... Intestinal Disgorge. They're one of my favorite bands and I've never heard anything that sounds so brutal and repulsive.

What he said.
Terrorizer's World Downfall sounds nothing like Libido Airbag's Barrel Blowjob.

Thanks for the info.

Actualah, I suppose I can already tell whatcha mean.....i'm listening to Intense Hammer Rage right now (who are pornogrind if i'm not mistaken???) and you're right....under the vocals and awful production...the riffery is pretty much as you describe.

And yesm, grind, Pig Destroyer....the vocals *screams* ack! However, having no real knowledge of punk, I wouldn't know what metal influenced punk is meant to sound like.

And I spose goregrind is the heaviest huh? =)

quick question > what would you call Enmity? They're described as brutal deathgrind...but their production is so awful that I really can't tell if the guitaring is technical in any way (enough for it to be death metal)....and the drums blast at one tempo all the time pretty much, so..... Well, ok, I do hear a guitar squeal in the background once or twice in every other song, heh.

Couple of points:

1) Is goregrind the heaviest? Tough call, really depends on what you consider heavy. For grind, for instance, Pig Destroyer, while occasionally exhibiting absolutely DEVASTATING heaviness (see the song "Pixies" off "38 counts of battery" for one example. That will crush your skull), are probably not considered all that "heavy" in the traditional sense. However, other grind bands might very well fall into that definition like Rotten Sound (Murderworks in particular) or Phobia (Destroying the Masses in particular).

Porno grind might well considered "heavy" as well, if you like repetitive, headbanging riffs, which I could totally understand why someone would define that as heavy.

And, to be honest, a lot of goregrind's production is too poor for any of the bands to be truly considered "heavy", at least in an almost physical sense, which is often how I define heavyness. The point of goregrind, IMHO is not the heavyness (although some DO in fact excel at that aspect of it. I have said it before, and will say it again, the Mexican Disgorge is the heaviest band on the planet, bar NONE.). The point is the filth. If listening to a goregrind band does not make you feel like you have just rolled like a dog in something moist, smelly and repulsive, then it probably is not goregrind, or at least should not be labeled as such!!!

2) The description of Intestinal Disgorge has caught my attention. Where can I find some? I am very interested.

3) Hmmmm, what was my last point? Can't remember. I am sure it was earth-shatteringly profound, but it will have to wait.

Intestinal Disgorge has recently gotten back together after a long haitus, and they should be releasing an album in the near future.

In their 'songs,' they liberally sample screaming females pulled from horror movies (or perhaps they are fortunate enough to make such vile sounds themselves), so the final result is already filthy music made almost unbearable thanks to the horrible tortured screams everywhere. Great fucking stuff. This is the true border band between the most extreme of metal and harsh noise electronica.

They've released a few albums, though: 'Drowned in Rectal Sluge,' and the true god of all gore/porn: 'Whore Splattered Walls.' They also did a split with a band I can't remember at the moment that was called 'Ejaculation Onto Exposed Suppuration Organs.' All three are out of print. Oh, they have a few other things floating around that I've yet to track down... actually, I have a split of theirs shared with Slough, Abosranie Bogom, and Demonic Orgy as well.

Until a year or so ago, the MP3s were almost impossible to track down. Luckily, after waiting in queue on mIRC for ages, I finally got 'em. Actually, that was about a year ago today... Anyway, I have their two full lengths on CD-R, and their split shared. Since I've gotten the MP3s, I've distributed them liberally, and now, they're not terribly difficult to find on the file sharing program, Soulseek. In fact... I suggest you PM the user 'Magus' and ask him to add you to his list so you can get them. (He's a friend of mine)

You can PM me on the name 'ArsonistSavior,' and I'll add you (I have a pretty good collection of gore/porn/death MP3s) so you can download as you please.

I urge you to not pass judgment on the band until you hear 'Whore Splattered Walls.'

Enmity? I'd call that brutal "mess". They remind me of Brodequin though.

Btw not all grind bands are the same, there is an excellent Spanish band called Haemmorage and they have a pretty female guitarist. :-)

Has anyone heard of Avulsed?......they are a pretty good gore/grind/death band from Spain. They have a pounding drum sound like Suffocation with erie melolic parts in some songs.....good stuff.

Avulsed are absolutely one of the best bands playing melodic brutal death...but they're definately not grind anymore.
