I only heard a few songs by Gorguts and it was interesting at first listen. I've tried to get into Meshuggah several times but they just sound aweful every time.

They're both off-timed, low-tuned death metal. Sure, they have different styles though there are also elements that are similar. Both are also trend-setters, in their own right, that have been around for quite some time.

Though, largely, the idea came from a discussion between a friend and I.

I dunno, I think the main difference that pretty much completely sets them apart is that Meshuggah are more groove-oriented, while Gorguts are more spastic and chaotic. I don't understand the notion that Meshuggah are somehow less innovative (not mentioned by you btw, I saw it earlier itt), because there weren't really any bands doing what they did before them.

I love Meshuggah and have only heard a couple of Gorguts songs, so I'm obviously going to have to go with Meshuggah.

Obscura isn't generic, since nothing else sounds like it. For the same reason, I don't see it being a part of any trends. You're either extremely dumb or confusing the gay band Obscura with the album by the same name from Gorguts, the latter being the one that's being discussed here.

Further irony comes from your music taste, which contains many generic, trendy technical metal bands. :)
