got 1800 to spend on a single channel preamp, what's the smart buy?

Go behringer fuck the dumb shit:lol:

What about like the api lunchbox and then you can keep adding pre's/eq/comps and stuff but I'm not sure how api or like osa pre's work on vocals maybe someone could chime in and give some more info!!

I don't know what I am talking about since I have never heard the lunchbox but it seems like it wouldn't be as good as an avalon pre.

i went with the great river
gonna get the x73 next (its actually around 2g's when you buy the seperate power supply :erk: )

so all in all my 5,000 dollar-ish purchase was

mackie onyx 800 r
rme fireface 800
greatriver ME1NV
rode K2
akg k240 headphones (holy crap, you must own a pair! amazing!)
presonus hp4 headphone amp

can't wait to hook all this crap up to my windows machine only to discover i'll probably have a computer problem to troubleshoot before i can even use any of this (amd 64bit dualcore 2.8ghz 2 gig ram .5 terrabyte winxp pro)

im really hoping all the new gear will be an improvement instead of a learning experience.

congratulations man. nice gear for sure. have fun with the new toys:kickass:

yea i wanna here some recording with that stuff:rock:

You gonna use that rode k2 with screaming vocals at all or is it just for singing??

so far im not digging the k2!

not sure how i feel about the great river yet, just ran vocals on it
so far my first impression of it is its a solid state pre that tries to sound tube, but that could just be my lack of experience with stuff like this

we didnt get anything tracked, the vocalist kept complaining he couldnt hear him self through the headphones enough, had him cranked in the control room (which is the same as the headphone mix).

really sucked and really bummed out that i rushed all this stuff here to use on the project only to decide its not the sound we're looking for

the k2 was too bright (in comparison to the music), and didnt give the vocalist enough oomph to pump his voice up.

compressed the living crap out of it and still no umph

hoping we come up with a solution today! its crunch time, 2 days left to start and finish vocals (lots of singing, little screaming) for the entire full length (and mix and master before they leave!)

yikes

i should mention the tube mic put a little edge on his screaming, in a good way
also it picked up a little more detail from his voice than im usually used to, in a good way

but all in all, the response of the mic is way too bright for my tastes
if i ran those vocal tracks with the k2 through my mastering chain, there'd be ESS's and lots of thinness coming out of the vocal tracks!

I'm planning to get the 800R in the next few weeks. Let us know how you are getting on with it. Congrats on your purchases man.

hooked it up last night
recorded some direct prs tracks, was kinda funny and wasnt meant to be a true testament

im just suprised everythign worked when i hooked it up, haha
thats usually not my luck

rme sounds great compared to firepod
even the output to the monitors is better

headroom is 2x more than the firepod (-120)

awesome, can't wait to do some real drums with this mackie for true test!
