I remember someone here saying they had an extensive knife collection. I need a good "real" knife for outdoor/practical* purposes. I'd like to buy something US-made and upmarket. SureFire seems to make some nice knives and they're in the $300-500 range. Any reco's?

Good for cutting open MRE's.

In actuality I think it's considered a pretty crap knife? I'm no expert.

That seems to be the going rate for quality knives. I don't bother with anything cheap - it just costs you more in the long run when it breaks and needs replacing.
Is that so wrong?

I'm not sure who told you that you need a $500 knife, but for general "outdoor/practical uses" you don't. I carry a knife, and a Gerber multi-tool. The knife is a $40 Columbia River knife, not the greatest in the world but durable as hell and stays sharp relatively long. When I'm backpacking/camping I carry a fairly large sheathed Gerber as well. If you know how to sharpen a knife properly you really do not need a ridiculously expensive knife.

I'm fairly certain dorian gray isn't about to go camping, hiking, or fishing anytime soon which only leaves me to believe that he is in fact Jame Gumb

We use knives A LOT and I don't know anyone that uses a $500 knife.

The most popular by far are multi tools, Gerber and Leatherman specifically.

I finally got a leatherman as a christmas gift from Cara but I haven't really had much chance to use it to its fullest yet, other than to open envelopes or snip things with the wire cutters.. I'm sure it'll come in handy eventually.

multi-tools = :kickass:

edit: oh , I've probably used the ruler along the side more than anything else :/ ha ha ha

A lot of guys have this:

They like it because of the C4 punch and blasting cap crimpers, but the point is that they work well under stress. I like the Leatherman style of of opening better then Gerber though.

Now that every member of RC has made fun of the dorian, I hope you all enjoy playing with your made-by-Chinese-slaves junk. I've had multiple <$50 knives and multi-tools. They've all broken. Secondly, anyone who uses tools on a regular basis knows multi-tools are a gimmick. My current tool needs have necessitated me filling an entire truck tool box. I do all my own home maintenance. This summer I stripped and varnished oak doors in 107 degree heat. I've changed my own timing belt on a DOHC engine, installed a roll cage, replaced brake pads in a parking lot, installed a Borla exhaust system, the list goes on. You can't even unscrew a washer/dryer hook-up with a multi-tool.
I had a $25 Gerber pocket knife actually break in half. It was dangerous.
