ermmm ... U know the one from Anathematimatter ;) he's my fave and now i shut up or it'll turn into ass licking ...

others are :

Mike Amott
Dimebag Darell
Hanneman/King
--- that is for metal stuff --- and it's non-exhaustive because

Hendrix
The Edge
Gilmour
Mark Knopfler
--- that is for non-metal stuff of course and it's also non-exhaustive because

Steve Vai
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Joe Satriani
Jimi Hendrix
John Petrucci
Edward Van Halen
Jimmy Page
Frank Zappa
Eric Clapton
Carlos Santana
B.B. King
...

oh man they're too many, all with different styles... :)

BTW cedarbreed if you're getting technical it doesn't mean that you don't have feeling, the magic comes when balancing those two. Well malmsteen lost the balance long ago, for me, he's a wanker as well.

Greg Macintosh in his earlier days (when he still played that guitar)

Indeed the Opeth pair is good, Anders is a talented songwriter and Swano an amazing musician he plays every instrument pretty well :)

To each his own a opinion, but I am a bass player I don't tend to pay attention to guitar players

ha ha ha

hehe  just kidding but i wasnt expecting guitar heroes on this thread, anyway , you should pay more attention to guitar players if you play the bass guitar , unless you are of that kind of bass guitar players who play only ' with the drums' ;)
BTW, which bass guitar players do you think are great ?

hmm...this is a really good topic...

here are just some of my faves:

definitely Mike Amott (especially for his work in Spiritual Beggars)

Anders Nyström (Diabolical Masqerade, Katatonia, etc.)

Jarmo Puolakanaho (from an (obviously ;)) finnish band called "Eternal Tears of Sorrow", I love his playing style!)

Anders Björler of The Haunted/ex-At the Gates (he's got a lot of feeling for a death/thrash guitarist...)

there is too many to mention. theres loads of classical/celtic/blues/jazz/spanish/indian/whatever guitarists that i couldnt name. but as for the others, never mind satch and petrucci...
