Growling....?

so like i said... no try, just do it. practice with your cds. find someone whos growl is close to yours. dont do it in an imitating way... go all out. not huge volume, just like you mean it. try to use your stomach muscles to take it easy on your throat. dont continue to hurt yourself if you are. start of in small amounts and practice consistently. practicing to cds will help you figure out what the 'masters' are doing in terms of phrasing and breathing.

i just noticed hopkins is a few yrs younger than me. that makes our sexual tension even more exciting.

Growling....? July 26th, 2003 11:20 AM really you suck man. don't try to tell others how to growl because you can't.

obviously you're a n00b because you're not even able to give or take any rep at all. Plus you're a pussy... too much of a pussy to leave your name on a rep at least so that I may respond to you individually. Maybe you'll see this then...

What the FUCK do you know about growling that makes you some kind of professional? Explain yourself, Mr. Know-It-All. What do you know about growling that I don't? Tell me about the times you've even tried. Tell me what makes you so much more knowledgeable on this matter than I. If you're who I'm betting you are (being that you're a n00b) I doubt you even know shit-all about metal.

You God Damned Pussy.

I growl lots and lots and lots and lots and lots. Heh.

What happened with me is I started out just tearing up my throat, with this little gurgley strangled sound coming out that was just shit. It really hurt too and I would have coughing fits. However, I kept at it...and there reached a point where I miraculously learnt how to do it. I just stopped tearing up my throat and started sucking air out of the bottom of my chest. The air comes up your windpipe from your guts, and you can feel it hit the back of your throat, which serves as an amplifier. You should not be trying to produce air from your throat and putting all the pressure on it...you should be able to feel a thick gathering of air at the back of your mouth and the top of your throat. This comes out and you feel the back of your throat vibrating, but not hurting.

I suppose that just doing it the right way for ages strengthens your throat muscles, because where once I would have coughing fits heaps and feel dizzy in the past (although I still feel a bit lightheaded if I go too hardout), I can now go for ages and do big growls without even feeling any pain. However, I still find that simply going too hardout for too long can make my voice drop a few octaves and sound funny...but hey it doesn't hurt anymore and sounds good. I just think that if you overextend even if you know how to do it you can probably still damage yourself. Growling is good in moderation I find...perhaps one hour a day or less if I'm recording stuff.

Hope that helps...:)

Hmmm, I'm not sure...I think it came naturally for me. I was sick of all the pain at growling then one day I just did it right.

Not very scientific or helpful huh? It prolly helps to know what you are trying to do though. ;)

Hmm i'm trying to learn some vocals that can work well in thrash/death metal pretty much :Spin:
I really suck at regular vocs except slow Damnation:ish singing so i guess i suck at vocal techniques whatsoever.
But i should just keep on practicing and the right way to do it comes, or what?

Well...it may or may not, thats just how it was for me. If you keep doing it wrong for too long you will fuck up your voice. So I guess you should just practice breathing out heavily so your breath is distorted...just quietly. Then slowly work your way onto getting it louder and if it starts hurting then ease off again and keep testing your voice. Eventually you are bound to find the right level or pitch and intensity. Just keep trying but if you find yourself clutching your throat and going 'fuck this hurts' then I suggest giving it a break and starting again maybe in a day or two.

Practice. :)

Hmm, so the technique is sorta like breathing out air slowly and heavily to distort the voice while doing the vocs or something like that?
Well, i'll probably learn someday, hopefully before i lose my voice permanently

Well sort of, you do breathe out slowly to prolong the sound. Actually, thats quite an accurate description of what it is...well, at least how I do it. :)

Come one Phoenix, I wasn't the only one that laughed, and it was all harmless fun. Lighten up!

the idea is to listen to death metal before pretending you know what sucks and what doesn't pertaining to death vox
