Growling

i growled for a couple of minutes on a friend's song, some three years ago. i merely try to come up with the most guttural sounds that are humanly possible. i wasn't exactly bad at it, but i'm tiny and feeble as a squirrel, so after my vocal "performance" i ended up with no voice for a week. ;)
that's all i know, sorry. :err:

Well.. I´ve been growling for at least half of year now.. I use the upper part of the throat and backpart of mouth to get my kind of voice (quite high pitched) and fore part of my mouth to make low pitched voice..
I haven´t lost my voice, just throat ache if go scream without practising for a looong time.

RealHazard, man who growled Blinded by Fear today.

God damn! I must admitt it's really hard. I can't really say I am trying, because my effort is useless. But from what I've growled it sounds like shit. So any good tips will be good for me.

I try to growl a bit, and it's quite melodic, but i doubt it's anything close to an actual growl. I should try for black-metal screams me thinks..

Anyway, i think you should use your diaphragm in order to: not ruin your vocal chords, give more power and duration to your growl, and perhaps make a more guttural sound..

as a singer in a melodic death metal band, ill give you a few tips :), get voice lessons in classical singing. itll be the best investment ever, youll laugh at me now but ive been in choir at school since 4th grade, it really has improved my voice. also try not to sing from your throat, it causes damage to your vocal chords and nodules form and sometimes can result in the destruction of your vocal chords. try to sing from your stomach and only use your throat as small filter, but try not to rely on it, use it sparingly. after a while you wont even use your throat. its hard to explain typing it out, but if you invest in the voice lessons, theyll do most of the work heh..

you use your diaphragm rather than your throat, its really hard to explain, but you know youre doing it correctly if it doesnt hurt. you also get a clearer scream, angela from arch enemy has a raspy scream because she screams from her throat, you can tell because i think it was around last christmas she had throat nodules

Well, yes, take Zero's advice about doing the gutteral growls. Personally, I only use them when I am doing a straight up death metal growl, i.e. Mikael Åkerfeldt. I still have trouble with Stanne's growling style from Damage Done, but I am getting there. As for black metal, I use my throat for that... it helps getting the high pitched tone. I am pretty good with Anders Friden-style growls too.

All around, some tips would be to stop when your throat starts to hurt. Drinking any warm liquid while practicing will help prolong the time you have to practice without your throat starting to hurt. By "using your stomach" to growl... well, I'll try to explain. You really should be using your abdomen to push the air up through your throat. It's hard to explain, but that is what it feels like.

Hope this helped some of you folks...

Having Carcass as the first extreme metal band I listened to, I learned to do a pretty mean Bill Steer growl (also doubles as a great Dr. Klaw impersonation) and a decent Jeff Walker growl as well. The deep Steer growl I could do all day...I guess that one comes from my stomach as you guys say. The higher pitched growls I can never get without hurting after a while, especially the melodic death metal bands. The way they sometimes half-talk half-growl.

Eh, I'll get it some day. Until then It'll only be me listening to myself in the car :).....
