"Guess the Riff" Game

The recorder.

"Just pick any one from the song, record it, upload it, and copy and paste the riff list with the one you just did exchanged with another of your choice."

woops didn't see that
EDIT: Dibs seek and destroy
EDIT2: o.k I've recorded Seek and Destroy and done 1:25 which is 4 riffs is this how long you want it? or like 25 seconds long?

Dude, it doesn't matter. Just record whatever the hell you want, do the whole thing if you like.
It's just about having fun, experimenting with different recording techniques, sharing settings, and learning new riffs. AFter a certain amount of time, there's going to be at least one riff that you've not heard of, but you should learn one anyway.

If you've recorded SOMETHING from Seek And Destroy, post it and edit the list with a song of your choice.

O.K here is Seek & Destroy. Recorded through a built in mic. Just added a few things. http://www.sendspace.com/file/2xbslk
New list:
Lamb Of God - Hourglass
Iron Maiden - The Trooper
Children Of Bodom - Children Of Bodom
Annihilator - King of the Kill
Slayer - Dead Skin Mask

It sucks that I mustn't touch my guitar. But only another 3-4 weeks to go... than I'll have written (hopefully succesfully) the second part of the final latin exams and can think of other stuff too.

So I was a bad boy yesterday just to keep this game going ;)

New Riff List:
Lamb Of God - Hourglass
Metallica - Motorbreath
Children Of Bodom - Lake Bodom
Annihilator - King of the Kill
Slayer - Dead Skin Mask

I'll do another riff later, I've got the whole day off. dave, you should do one before then so this thread can do just that...pick up.

I've done a quick one of Lake Bodom. I think I'll keep a COB riff always in the list because it's the COB board. :kickass:

Thanks! I wanted to record Children of Bodom - " , but you was faster. Nice to hear you nailing this triplet riff. It's not super hard, but it's very hard to play it tight imo.

Lake Bodom is pretty amazing, did you use Epi's soundfonts?

P.S.: Don't forget to post your opinions on some tracks I sent you ;)

@the other players: I think feedback on every recorded track would be cool. So dave, I think it's cool that you got nearly the exact kill 'em all tone with your limited abilities lol .

You should record that riff anyway just for fun, I'd like to hear it. :D

I actually used GP5 for Lake Bodom. I used standard drums and "Slap Bass 1". I think the keys are "String Ensemble 1" or something.

And I had a quick listen to some of those tracks and there's loads of jazz. Noooooo. :p I love the Satch tune because I've always liked him but I really don't dig Jazz. It's suprising that I like that song by the Portico Quartet.

I tried not to push it

But I added a Justin Timberlake track to encourage you to spend your money on one of his albums (and not shitty Avril :D). He rules!

To remember:
Lamb Of God - Hourglass
Metallica - Motorbreath
Children Of Bodom - Sixpounder
Annihilator - King of the Kill
Slayer - Dead Skin Mask

I'll record something in 24 hours.

I'll record in 18hrs ish. Awesome Lake Bodom Mitch!. Yeah i also really liked "the trooper" Corny

Here I go, nearly exact 24 hours later :D

Annihilator - King Of The Kill
Right Link: http://www.sendspace.com/file/zufoy4

I recorded the whole song. I had no tab for the solo, so I gave the song on www.myspace.com/annihilatorofficial a quick listen and tried to play it with the vibe of the original. I EQed the guitars this time and used the PX4D.

Comments and especially tips regarding the mix and EQing would be awesome. It's late and my ears are dead, but I think the bass drum is not present enough in the mix, what do you guys think?

New list:
Lamb Of God - Hourglass
Metallica - Motorbreath
Children Of Bodom - Sixpounder
Blind Guardian - Another Holy War
Slayer - Dead Skin Mask

In terms of the mix, I think the guitars were a bit muddy and very bassy. I don't know what you used to record that "drum test" thing a while ago but that guitar tone was great!!!

I do also think the kick was a little too quiet too.

I did Sixpounder:

New list:
Lamb Of God - Hourglass
Metallica - Motorbreath
Children Of Bodom - Northern Comfort
Blind Guardian - Another Holy War
Slayer - Dead Skin Mask

Awesome and thick tone.

I fail at creating a tone which is suitable for open Powerchords AND Palm muted single note riffs. So I liked the tone of these open Powerchords in the annihilator song, but the same settings sounded much too muddy for the main riff.

I wonder if large studios use different tracks for different kind of riffs...

I did (to get it out the way) Slayer - Dead skin mask, but i only did the riffs i liked.
Once again excuse my bad recording quality i have limited equipment. http://www.sendspace.com/file/jhzoxb
New List:
Lamb Of God - Hourglass
Metallica - Motorbreath
Children Of Bodom - Northern Comfort
Blind Guardian - Another Holy War
Sinergy - Lead Us To War

Corny, great job! With a better tone it would be extremely awesome.
Warheart also great job! You could maybe turn the guitar up a bit in your recording. (and if you do the whole of Lead Us to War can you send me the backing with the rhythm guitar as well please:p. I would like to perform it for an exam at school and my recording tone is rubbish:lol:)
