Hey guys

I'm after some opinions on the what would be my best option for a guitar to do some pop punk and soft rock recordings.

I already have a loomis, c7 hellraiser and a Les Paul with active emg's so i need something to cover the softer end of the scale lol.

I've always been a bit of a strat fan so i was thinking either a standard strat and put a hotrails in it, or maybe even one of the HSS strats? Or if someone else has any other recommendations?

The strat would also cover me for those times when i feel like playin some blues so i'm leaning that way, but i wanna make sure that i can still get good pop punk type tones from it. And i'm not sure which way to go pickup wise?

Gonna head down the music shops tomorrow so hopefully i can get some good advice :D

Cheers

Phil

I'm loving mahogany guitars with a p90 pickup for that sort of stuff.

The Gibson Joan Jett is also pretty cool for stuff like that

Lasse and I agree - Mahogany with P90s are a perfect match for this type of sound. Les Paul Jr can be had for a great price used and would meet your needs well. Over the past few years I've had an ongoing love affair with P9o pickups - simply a kick ass rock and roll pickup.

cheers for the input guys, it seems like changing out the pickups in the les paul for now might be the best option. Going for that whole wonder years - upsides, story so far style music.

Well there goes my excuse to go buy a strat lol, those humbucker ones look really interesting, but if they dont record well for this sort of stuff it can wait.

Cheers

No reason not to add a Strat to the arsenal man. Keep the Gibson loaded with the EMGs. Strats and Les Pauls are just such totally different animals, so it would be good to have that extra tool in the box with the strat.
You get yourself an alder body wood based guitar with at least one good passive humbucker in there, and you've got a guitar that will run the entire spectrum from pop punk all the way to 80s style thrash metal rhythm guitar.

You may even want to seriously consider a Jackson Pro Series Dinky.
They make look 'metal', but if you buy the right one, they are DAMN VERSATILE guitars with excellent build quality. Better value for money than any Fender at the same price point in the Australian market, easily.
From blues, reggae, pop punk/alternative rock, to 80s thrash (and I say this from first hand experience too with a Dinky Pro series, not just based on the specs and/or what I've read), those guitars have you covered without even needing to think of having to swap pickups.

what's your budget? Digging P90s in SGs or Melody Makers alot atm, but imho they're a little
limited soundwise, a nice tele or strat would be cool, but I would go for something like a framus
with a good non-floyd rose trem, brighter sound and at least 2 Single Coils, so you have the
option for rock rhythm with a humbucker in the bridge position and great cleans from the
single coils-loving the Music Man Steve Lukather for stuff like that but it's expensive and has EMGs.

A few guitars I would consider:

http://www.thomann.de/gb/fender_deluxe_power_strat_fishman_2sb.htm (this one has a piezo, too)

and if you're able to try one, the Yamaha Ty Tabor Signature is really awesome imho!

If you need something cheap but decent, Vintage builds a SG with 2 P90s, sounds pretty
good, to me, I am a sucker for PRS guitars, but these are expensive, too ;)

cheers for the help all

ended up picking up an american strat, in blizzard pearl with maple fingerboard and its gorgeous! I'll try it out as is for awhile and if needed i'll chuck a hotrail pickup in the bridge.

I figured i can get another set of pickups for the les paul and swap in/out if needed.
