Guitar Question - Pick Slide

I have a question for you guitar freaks out there: every time I try the pick scrape/slide on the strings, i get nothing but a weird noise or ugly screech, but nothing like the heavy distortion bomb you can get. Do you have to use a particular technique? I've tried using different pick inclinations, pick gauge, picking two or one string, tring to scrape with the strings already ringing, but nothing.

scrape hard with the pick perpendicular to the string going towards the headstock, with some gain. you need to have roundwound strings and you need a decent size pick gauge (ie I can't get a good scrape with a 3mm but with an .88mm or a 1mm I get a good one)
