Guns: Hunting/Defense

Ha! You dudes would blow a vessle trying to understand how things work in Canada....Can you say "Native American Politics" and "Parti Quebequios" vs the Good Ol´Limey Boys in Ottawa? Anyhow, as for the original thread, we have a semi-restricted gunlaw, with a registry, which is not working at all. It is illegal to buy a rifle without taking some classes first (this is so that you can handle the rifle, and store it safely, but also so that you can actually aim it and fire it without making an animal suffer needlessly because you hit it in the foot instead of killing it...duh.), so now, besides from myself, who actually took the classes, the only people who own a rifle is the local criminal down the road who use it for drivebys. Handguns are practically impossible to get in a legal fashion.

When I grow up I'm buying an RPG. They make bigger holes. Fuck handguns.

I actually got into shooting rifles because I wanted to shoote a crossbow, and you need the same permits to buy one of those as you do for a rifle. In other words, I had to prove that I can assemble, disassemble, clean and store a rifle and a handgun, even though I will never be able to own a handgun (I don't have a reason that is politiclly correct enough for me to pull the permit to transport one). I have used several different kinds of both types of weapons, but i don't own one at the moment. Mind you, I was kidding about the RPG, but I have a tendency to like the bigger calibre rifles. I used rifles strictly for targetpractise, though, moving or otherwise, so I don't know if I would still like the higher calibre stuff if I were hunting to kill. Big holes really fuck up the nice pelts....

We've got an interesting situation in Scotland.

All handguns are outlawed and only people with certain jobs such as farmers and gamekeepers are allowed to have shotguns. This is because of a horrific incident where a madman forced his way into a primary school and killed some very young children and their teacher.

Do the criminals still have guns? Yes. That's not as big a problem as you might think. There has recently been a gang war in Glasgow, but for the most part it's been criminals shooting other criminals, so while gun crime still exists it doesn't affect most of the population to any real extent.

My personal opinion is that hunting is acceptable (with guns, as opposed to fox hunting where the animal is torn apart by a pack of trained hunting dogs). It would be pretty hypocritical of me to eat meat and suggest that animals should not be killed.

As for personal defence, I personally wouldn't want a gun. I don't need one. I'm unlikely to ever have to defend myself against anyone armed with one. Knives are more of a problem in Scotland, and I'm reasonably confidant in my ability to defend myself at close range - my favoured course of action being to stun the enemy then run very fast in the opposite direction

Ohhhh, guns... In Russia it is so easy to get a gun, that sometimes I think that each day of my life may be the last one... Lots of crazy motherfuckers walk along the street with the guns, they gonna kill all people who stands in their way. It is vain to ban the guns. If you have money- you have the power, you have the guns... And if you have guns you have money... Even our army sells guns on black market, so...

I belive in keeping guns for defense, mostly because I don't trust the redneck nutjobs that suround me. As for hunting I can't get into hunting for sport hunting to eat is perfectly fine but whats the point of killing something for no reason.
