townsend got many different sounds in his projects so :

for something really epic and extremelly he(a)vy , Strapping young lad - city

something melodic and more ambiant in aprog-rock sound , ocean machine

something metal but still with a bit of melodic and progresive with some other elements as well , terria (which
is the album that has the lead in the very "best devin townsend album" pool)

something metal but with very special influences (such as ska and jazz) , infinity

something very heavy (again) but with loads of melody and
saturated of atmospheric keyboards , physicist.

so make a choice and pick the album that suits you the best
but be sure to check them all out.
