Do you guys find yourselves with way too much 100-300 when you let guys hold mics vs traditional studio style? I feel like have to EQ the low end a ton to compensate for the extra proximity effect and get (back) to something remotely natural.

Yep... The space built into the SM7 is extremely practical and addresses this situation perfectly (plus it's just a clean sounding dynamic mic in general). I find that really the only concern left is making sure that the vocalist doesn't shove his face onto the mic so the pronunciation sounds bad, or try to cup it.

I honestly haven't had any problems with any boominess or anything in the lowend on vocal tracks with hand-held mics (obviously of high quality such as the sm7.) But I ALWAYS highpass vox anyway.

^^ Yep.

But while tracking? I mean with the HP engaged on the sm7? I do this afterwards so I can cut as low as I want to. The sm7 HP is too much sometimes

Yeah, obviously I HP vocals no matter what. However I'm not talking about an SM7 or an RE20 but normal handheld mics (58, i5, beta87, 535, etc.). The broadcast mic suggestions make sense.
