http://mma.fanhouse.com/2008/11/20/...-reljic-risks-life-to-rescue-two-men-wh/#cont

A story in the Croatian newspaper Slobodna Dalmacija that says the Croatian UFC fighter Goran Reljic risked his life to rescue two men who had crashed their car into the Adriatic Sea.

According to the English translation of the newspaper account that I was provided, Reljic was in bed when he heard the crash, and he jumped out, swam to the car, broke the windshield and pulled the men out. Either the account has been exaggerated a bit or Reljic is a real-life superhero.

Reljic is 8-0 in his pro MMA career, but he pulled out of UFC 90 with a back injury. Apparently it takes more than a bad back to keep Goran Reljic from saving someone's life.

Below, a complete translation of the Croatian article.

UFC fighter Goran Reljic risks own life to rescues two men

A crash that almost killed two young men on the 15th of October at around 3 a.m. could have had disastrous consequences when the two young men, both from Privlaka, spun and crashed into the sea.

Thankfully both men survived, due to the brave actions of Goran Reljic, the Croatian ultimate fighter, who resides in the immediate vicinity of the town in question.

When he heard the crash, Goran jumped out of bed, still in his underwear and jumped into the sea.

He swam to the car, proceeded to break the windshield of the vehicle and pull both men to land. Several eyewitness accounts confirm the story and so does Goran, who doesn't want any praise or recognition for the good deed.

"The only satisfaction I get is that both young men are alive and healthy, I don't need any praise, I simply did what anyone one would have done in that situation," Reljic said.

Reljic was scheduled to fight on October 25, but a back injury forced him out of his fight with Brazilian Thales Leites. Even with his back injury Reljic did not hesitate to help and rescue the two young man from the sinking car.

Only way that story could be more epic is if he was having sex when he heard the crash, and jumped out of bed and broke the windshield with his boner and then the two men used each testicle as a flotation device. Honestly, I am a person who normally sticks his neck out to help someone, in any situation... but I honestly can say I probably wouldn't dive into the sea (I mean if the water was deep enough that you couldn't see the car)... I'm like, scared, of drowning that way... by someone else holding onto you.

Damn, this is the only good HL vid I can find of him on youtube.

I believe people like him are the next step in human evolution.

While I respect the physical prowess of professional athletes...

That video reminds me of nothing so much as two cavemen duking it out. If that is the next step in human evolution, it is a step backwards.

Have you ever watched a UFC fight? It's far from cavemen throwing mindless blows. It's a fucking art form. These guys bust there balls to learn all the tactics and strategy involved in their discipline.

To clarify, I mean that if you feel superior ability in the realm of combat as a spectator sport is a desirable trait to determine reproductive potential, you might have missed out on the last several thousand years of human history and civilization.

I was referring more to the fact that compared to the rest of the world's population, he's more physically AND mentally put together. He's got brains AND brawn and he does all the correct things with both. He could literally kill you or save your life in a matter of seconds but he's got enough wits about him to make the correct decisions when it counts.

Gone are the days of people mastering one thing. The future is now mastering one thing and moving on to master another. Instead of being a "jack of all trades" people want more and thus are becoming "masters of all trades." This is why I think MMA fighters are the most complete athletes in the world. They work harder than any other athlete, for longer than any other athlete and then when it's game time, they get punched in the face by guys that have worked just as hard they have. They don't focus on just one martial art or style of fighting. They learn it all and put it together to their own advantage. This obviously results in less than complete skills in any aspect of the game (hence why some of that clip may have looked like cavemen fighting), but the way fighters and humans are evolving, it won't be long until there are guys that are 100% in every aspect of the sport. There are guys already that are close (GSP!! GSP!! GSP!!), but soon you won't even see guys in the professional end of the sport that lack any skills in any part of the game. People will just get better and keep evolving.

Goran Reljic just proved that aside from being a complete fighter he's a complete human being too. People with abilities, smarts, instincts, and humanity like his are the forerunners of human evolution in my opinion. He epitomizes the term "role model."

:headbang:

Who said anything like that?

The dude just jumped in the ocean and pulled two guys from a car and saved their lives. Would/could you do that?

No, but I don't think that altruism is necessarily a desirable social trait in all people at all times. If he is indeed a shining paragon of humanity, then I'd rather have him alive than risk himself rescuing people who can't drive without crashing into a large body of water.

Well obviously no one knows the story behind how or why those two guys and their car ended up in the ocean, and it doesn't matter to begin with, but I bet they sure are glad Goran Reljic lived nearby to make sure they didn't die. Just like I am.

I sense an eventual "agree to disagree" coming up if we keep talking about this.

Fridays used to be awesome for me, but ever since I got a part-time job, in which I work 10am-7pm on a Saturday. They have lost their magic :(

arg. people just wanna be miserable and obnoxiously self-important today.

started the day by getting bitched at by some dour old codger for not being respectful in the face of his dour old codger-ness

last half hour of my shift was just a shitstorm of retardation including the most obnoxious, miserable over the age of 21 who i've ever met. there's a very long and VERY stupid story about her talking to the store manager to complain about some problem we gave her which i can barely even comprehend - but it pisses me off too fucking much for me to really tell coherently.
