Hey.

I just mixed the song!

Snare: replaced 70%
Kick: replaced 70%
The snare is too aggressive and kick/snare are a little too loud to my taste.
Don't like the toms :(

I think it sounds not bad at all but not pro. Also maybe too compressed??
Advices are welcome!!!

Yeah it was overcompressed, but not bad though. At least I felt like the instruments were in the same room. The guitars got a little messy sounding in the verse.

Thanks for your comment man.

I agree with you. But I like this ensemble bass/guitars. It's actually the first time I reach them 'coherent'.
I'm not good for that task. I usually have thin guitars and a not-so-low bass.
I wanted this overcompression but yeah maybe it's a bit too much ;) I had some Born From Pain songs as reference and I REALLY love this pumping 'Tue Madsen' sound so I tried to get something "similar"...

This mix was done in 2/3 hours. I'll post a second one with the drums just a little bit down and some corrections on snare and kick. Still fighting with the toms but don't wanna replace them. Also maybe some distortion on the bass??

You could bring the snare/kick up in your mix. What guitar tracks did you use? All? They sound phasey... I think 414 don't give good result.

Any other mix to share?

guitars are powerball in sm57 blended with 421 on V30.

Hi Hidemerre and thanks for sharing this!

Could you give more info about the guitars like mic positions, settings...? Actually I dig 'em! I just blended 421 w/ 57 with a little EQ + C4 and I like the way they sound!

I'm not familiar with engineering and I always fight with amp/cab/mic/ to get something decent. So I'm forced to use EQ+EQ+EQ, etc. during the mix and it never gives awesome result :(

Haha well if the pumping is something you dig then by all means go for it.

I actually used only 4 of the guitars. I didn't include the 414. . I think there was some frequency fighting in the low end of my mix maybe? I stripped everything as well as I could to give headroom for the instruments. I have a feeling you can only do so much with these stems though /=

So much fun, I love it :D

We totally need more like this on the board :D

Here is my go, no edits except for the bass volume and aligning the gang vocals ... for the br00tals you know.

I tried to keep as much of the orginal character as possible.
Only top kick sample blended it around 30%.

/Only had like 25 minutes on it so far, gonna enhänce the shit soon btw.
// I like the drums, really oldschool.

Hey Nice work, but the first straight to your face is a bit weird. I like the overall mix.I dont like hear delay of the vox. .... but this is just only my opinion.

The cab was a HB with V30 and sm 57 on the position where the cap meets the cone and the 421 at center. 2 or 3 fingers separation of the grill.

Settings was more or less....:

Gain 11:00 o´clock.
Bass 13:00 o´clock
Mids open at 9:00´o clock
Treble at 15:00 o´clock

I dont remember the settings of presence, depth and volume....

More or less these were the settings.

I'm glad you like it! I was really enjoying mixing the shit hehe..
Yeah I don't like very much delay on vox but I wanted to hear some repetition here and there when I was listening to the original so I applied one ;)

Thanks for the settings... :kickass:
HB is Harley Benton, right?
Mhh... I'll probably get one of those.. they're cheap and sound great with V30 in the belly.

Oh, what's the band name and where do they come from?? The drummer needs tightening but they kick ass! ^^

Yes HB is Harley Benton. Now i have this V30 in a old marshall Cab and sound much better than the HB. The wood on the HB its very crappy and i think that sounds better because it is thicker and has better frequency response.

We had problems when we recorded this, because as soon as he heard the click with the team we had at the time of the recording ....

We are now preparing to record new songs and we hope for something better ..

The band is called Trial of Mankind and we are from Madrid Spain.

You can follow the band on the facebook page:

Thanks man, appreciate the comment.

Bass was two tracks (miced non-DI bass multiplied).

Bass 808 chain (distortion, 6db lower then bass track main): Compressor (+9db gain, 2:1 ratio, treshold at -10, medium attack and fast release (TubeTech CL1b plugin in my case)) -> EQ (strong cut at around 1.3k) -> TSE 808 (drive at zero, rest to noon).

Bass track main chain: Compressor (same settings) -> EQ (tremendous drop at 600hz, slightly improved highs at around 15) -> EQ (roll the woofy low-end out and cut at 1.7k, even more enhanced highs).

The main bass goes into a reacomp at quite extreme settings (DM kick preset) whoose auxilary input is driven by the mic outside the kickdrum (sidechain compressor).

The master would then add some comp and saturation aswell as some high mids or so, but thats really to preference.

/I must give a shout out to the amp bass track, its pretty beast by itself, there where no wonders done to it.
//Oh, yeah, I boosted the bass volume by 4db in the intro, thats why it cuts thru so well btw.
