has anyone had success using an eletric drum kit + samples?

I'm just curious if anyone has had success buying an electric drum kit, using it as a midi controller, and sampling drum samples whether its metal foundry, slate, etc

Definitely.

I used to have a Roland TD-10 and I'd trigger SSD live for recording. Worked like a charm.

Yep, I used the same setup on 4 songs from the last CD I did. The band tracked drums at 2 different studios and the over heads for 4 songs sounded like shit, so we went back and just used an electric kit. go to www.utopianriot.com and check out the song Tides this was all done on an electric kit.

Yes.
As long as what you use spits out midi notes you can use anything.
Thats why you can use a keyboard to trigger the drums.
I bought a Roland HD1 to learn, great fun. Go for it
