Has there ever been...

How about if we expand the scope? Are there any outstanding female musicians in Metal (excluding vocalists)? I'm not suggesting there aren't, I'm just not aware of any. And by outstanding, I don't mean that they can hold their own. I mean that they deserve to mentioned among the truly elite guitar players, drummers, bass players, etc.

Not sure how you define "elite", but I think the two guitarists of the original line-up of Phantom Blue, Michelle Meldrum (R.I.P.) and Nicole Couch, both were very good guitar players.

The same goes IMO for the girls of Ice Age:

Fireball Ministry has a female guitar player, I would not say she is elite but I like it.

Good luck. By the way, what do you play?

What don't I play?
Above all I'm a singer, but I've been playing piano for 22 years, bass for 10 years, and I dabble in the fine art (read: did it in school) of viola, cello, clarinet and flute.
I also pretend to play guitar pretty well.
Vocals, piano and bass.
That's my deal.

And incidentally, I also bake a mean pie.

Karen Carpenter played drums. Nothing more metal than that.

She's not really metal, but as a shreddy type guitarist she blows 99% of guys away-Jennifer Batten.

yes!

she does indeed slay, im pretty sure she played with michael jackson for a while too.

there are definitely no female metal musicians that would be "elite" not even in the top 20(or 30 for that matter) IMO, so definitely not in the top 10. if there were, id think more of us would at least know of them.

Off the top of my head and not repeating those already mentioned, the first ladies who come to mind are those in Eluveitie, although their instruments are a little unconventional for metal. Meri plays violin and Anna plays the hurdy-gurdy (and no, I'm not making that up).

Nope, and she's quite good, too. Not that I'm an expert on seeing hurdy-gurdys being played live onstage, but I have seen Dead Can Dance.

--Twice.

I am not sure about elite but I think this gal deserve a honorable mention. She has played with and for the best. She lives in my little town here in TN.

Avalon (Germany,) which was Chitral Somopala (Chity Lanka) first band, that I heard him play in, had a female bassist named Petra Hasselkuss who was a founding member of Avalon.

Agreed. There are female Classical guitar players who clearly have amazing chops. My point was never to suggest that women aren't capable. The original post simply got me thinking, and I was wondering if there was someone I was forgetting.
