I’ve been playing ‘Brave New World’ last couple of weeks, and I love it man! It’s like playing opera music but on an electric guitar; the songs are long and the chords are of many voices but crunchy with lots of gain, and the rhythm is great, sometimes like playing counter point, The solos are quickly phrased in thirds and pentatonics and it’s hard to remember all of them all the time for 3 guitars, but when the song gets going, I got no problem winging it. I love that rhythm part that begins “The Nomad”; it’s quite fast and seems tricky, but when you relax and see the circle from chords to E, it’s a lot of fun! Now I just have to get to “Blood brothers”, this album easily takes up an hour. :headbang:

I can't play much from BNW - The Wicker Man, most of Dream Of Mirrors and some riffs from Ghost Of The Navigator, Brave New World and Out Of The Silent Planet but they are alot of fun to play!!! It's my favourite Maiden album and it's just amazing!!!!!!!! :headbang:

Cool. I won't give you my spew about bar chords today, but I can say this, look for voice overs instead, you will find the key, and it will get easier, you'll see. :headbang:

:err: Okay I’m sorry, I thought you knew what voice overs were, well they are chords with open strings; move the C chord up the neck and you have a voice over, you can move all patterns. Finger tip the standard bar chords instead of the usuall bar and you can play 3 strings out of it or 5 and leave strings 1,2 to to ring: i.e. “The Mecernary”. I love to use it all the time. In other songs you can shift that pattern up or down the rows and use it like moveable power chords, say starting on string 4 rather than 5 or 6 rather than 5. You can also use the cheating bar chord, I like to use where it’s like moving the A chord all around but you just palm the neck, and loosely hold your barring finger in the three finger assist fashion, so that all the fingers are together so that you can shift to and fro that bar, voice overs, chords, string bend and vibreto squeeze. Okay If you don’t know about 3 finger assist or vibreto squeeze or the door knob technique, then you better tell you teacher that he should show you those things, because that is the most important fundamental you will ever need to know. You will have lots of power in your fretting hand while remaining fast and relaxed with a light grip. Don’t mean to talk theory so much, but it seems that ‘palming the neck’ is not emphasize enough. Sometimes you can use your thumb behind the neck, but it’s not good practice in my opinion, just do whats comfortable, but try to palm as much as possible; it’s a dicpline.

What about anyone else? Is anyone playing this stuff?
What about the song 'Brave New World'? It's got such a pretty start, a cool rhythm, and pretty conclusion; fun song to play.

You know it’s a continuation of ‘Children of the Dammed’. I dig all the songs though.

I love the bass intro of Blood Brothers. Very easy but a nice pattern to play. It's funny when you've been playing Maiden for all of your "musical" career, (which for me started right around 83/84, just before Powerslave came out!) I find I really "think" like Steve... Often I can just hear a new song and start playing 90 % of it note for note... it's that last 10% that's the killer!

I still use To Tame A Land as a "warm up" song to play... that middle breakdown section before and into the solos gets my hands so clenched up and frozen... It's a finger-spreading riff that keeps repeating itself before going to another finger spreading riff... Great exercise! Love that song musically, but damn, I don't think I could ever memorize those lyrics!

I love Blood Brothers; makes ya’ just want to dance, look into the distance and play the melody and live it for a long time.
