head or a pedal?

here's a question

do black and death metal guitarists use distortions from pedals or the distortion from their head(amp)?
Every time i go see a concert i look for pedals but i can never find any, only a tuner and maybe effects like wah pedal or revert and stuff like that but i never noticed any distortion pedals.
what do u guys think?

i personally use a pedal because I think the distortion is A LOT better if you play through a pedal into a VERY clean sounding amp. But usually, heads are what most guitarists use live.
