Do you ever get the feeling, when listening to bands like Jag Panzer or Destiny's End for example, that it's all been done before by the likes of Maiden and Priest? Paying homage to your influences is all well and good, but a little innovation wouldn't go astray.

Actually the first Jag Panzer album sounds like Manowar. The new Primal Fear sounds like Judas Priest, but then again so did the latest Pegazus album. I have to agree... there's too many power metal bands that sound the same. When I heard the new Freedom Call, I thought "Why does this sound EXACTLY LIKE Gamma Ray?"

The new Primal Fear sounds like Judas Priest? So did their first album, which is why I never bothered with them after that :)

Did Ralf Scheepers ever get close to replacing Halford? I'm assuming he *did* audition...

Well considering neither Priest nor Maiden will never sound like themselves again, it's a good thing other bands do. :)

I was gonna say that about Metallica.
Not that I don't like new Metallica, but the older stuff is the shit.

I was d/ling some mp3s that are apparently demos for their new material. If it actually is them, some of them were pretty awesome!

This is why I like '80s metal so much better than newer stuff.

Look now... most power metal bands all sound the same. There's either the fantasy ones which sound the same as each other, the traditional ones which sound the same as each other, the speed ones which sound the same as each other... etc etc. The the same deal applies with death metal, black metal, etc... there are none which really sound unique. Well there are a few, Iced Earth, Blind Guardian, Opeth, Cradle Of Filth, etc... don't sound like anyone else.

The other main problem is the vocalists all sound too much the same. Most power metal vocalists all sound like Michael Kiske. Death metal singers are all the same. Black metal singers are all the same. Etc...

In the '80s, who wlse sounded like Blackie? Or Bruce? Halford? Sebastian? Alice? Axl Rose? Vince Neil? Mustaine? Klaus Meine? Dio? Ozzy? Nearly every '80s metal singer had a really unique voice of their own.

You only pulled about 10 out of a hat containing hundreds. There are plenty of vocalists now that sound unique. The trouble with the 80s scene (and I had the immense pleasure of being immersed in it at the time :D) is that a LOT of the bands sounded alike. Just as many then as now.

And no doubt people will be saying the same things about the 00s in the 20's that you're saying now about the 80s :)

I agree, but the flip side is that you'll always find people who find those singers you mentioned annoying.

Where from, Blitz?

Yeah I know that's true Sydo. But that's what comes with having a unique voice I spose rather than a generic one which is "safer" I spose.

Mark, bands in the '80s were much less generic. I mean of course you got a bunch of NWOMHM clones in the early 80s which sounded the same, then a bunch of Bay Area thrash bands that sounded the same and then in the late '80s the L.A. scene started getting alot of hair bands which looked and sounded the same. But overall, I think the original bands outnumbered the generic ones and I think now it is the opposite.

This is the review I wrote about Freedom Call:

"Sooner or later, the masses will wake up and realise that nu-metal all sounds pretty much alike. When that happens, of course, another fad genre will appear and take its place, and that will force nu-metal (which will, of course, be not-so nu by then) to reinvent itself, or die. We know this, because it happened to thrash, it happened to death metal and, thanks to bands like Freedom Call, it will soon happen to power metal. Let’s not beat around the bush any longer here: Freedom Call sound exactly like Gamma Ray. That’s all there is to it. It’s not just the fact they share the same drummer. Freedom Call sound exactly like Gamma Ray. End of story. I don’t really need to tell you anything else, because if you know what Gamma Ray sounds like, and the kind of albums they make, you will know instantly what this album is like."

Although I did just find this on a google search. It was from a newsletter dated July 2001:

==== NEW METALLICA SONGS? PT.2 ===================================
A month ago I wrote an article here about the so-called Metallica
songs "Valley of missery" and "hunger". I told you that they were
recorded by Hollochaust and Eternal Decision, and I also told you
that no other unreleased Metallica songs has escaped from the studios.

I still receive e-mails about so-called new songs, and lately a
demo on the whole new album is available on Napster, even thou they
haven't recorded anything yet! Don't let them fool you, it is NOT
Metallica.

Below is a list of songs some people say are Metallica, but are not.
Please note that the list might not be complete, so please do not
mail me if you have other tunes with other names.

A time for hate (Kerbdog)
Disposession
The serenade of fire
Zoom pod
Enter sandman II
Finally forgiven
Fuck like a beaver
Hunger (Ethernal Descison)
Just ask
The deceiever
Valley of misery (HolochausT)

Through False skies
Imperial March

I think bands like Priest and Maiden are in a totaly diferent page than bands like Destiny's End and the countless other power metal bands. Two diferent generes, one obiously influenced by the other but with its own identity,I personaly like to think of power metal as speed metal with good vocals.I do give alot of respect to bands like Helloween and Helstar because like Priest and Maiden they pioneered a new genere and created some incredible music.About bands starting to sound all alike I think its the record companies fault because they themselves oversaturated the scene by signing just about every band that they could get their hands on despite whether they were good or original, they have the quantity over quality philosophy.Look back at the 80's and you'll see it was much harder to get a record deal, now days all you need to do its look a certain way, know how to play a couple of notes on the guitar and you're signed.
