Heavy Ermz Mix

Haha! Can't win em all eh.

Fwiw I dig the general character of the mix. It's a little different... more pushed and abrasive. I couldn't imagine an airy or overly separated mix with music like this, so I didn't try. Dan gets it... totally right, was going for the Chaosphere vibe, but with actual low-end :)

Anyway, there's other stuff that's finishing up next week that will be closer to the aesthetic that you guys expect.

Yeah that's cool man, I had a bit of trouble getting all of it to unify. It's hard to mix metal drums with this much parallel compression. The bass of course is a love or hate thing. Me and the guys who dig the bass tones I do are enjoying it, but evidently others are put off. Ola seems to dig it for the moment too, which is the important thing :)

Usually in these cases there is one element that's wrong and it's putting everybody off. I have a feeling its those errant 2.3khz and 600hz mids Shadow Walker talked about, because they make the midrange hard to listen to. The guitars either need more or less processing... whichever way you think about it, hehe. They're just not going to sit in the mix like a V30 though, the character seems to demand different things. But yeah... that bass isn't going down. Too much is just right in this case!

It sounds too separated in this camp. Nothing is really blending well enough to make it sound heavy. The snare and kick sound pretty weak as well. The toms are pretty big though.

Not listening on monitors at the moment, so i might miss out on the subtleties but generally it sounds really good to me. Love the bass sound and loudness. The guitar tone misses some depth, but it doesn't seem as bad as most people seem to think. You also did some serious magic to the vocals when you compare them to the originals

I love the last one! The drums and bass are fucking heavy!

Thanks man, really glad you dig it. The goal was just to make everything as crushing as possible. I agree the first few versions were probably over-board with the low-end. It might still be, but since it's just a non-serious mix it will have to do! I've printed off the mix in full quality if you wanted me to pass it around for people to take shots at mastering it (free promo for both of us? :dopey:).

Got a few people telling me to turn the bass guitar down, but I don't believe in such things... gotta have that oil tanker scraping across concrete sound in the center. I think I'm secretly hoping that Fredrik will log on to Jocke's computer, get nostalgic for the 90s Meshuggah albums when he hears it and I get the mix to the next record.... maybe in my dreams

Thanks for all the comments guys.

Truer words have not been spoken. Bass in yo face or GTFO.

EDIT: but labels ALWAYS complain about this bullshit. ALWAYS. sigh. just let me do MY thing!!!

Those vocals Ermz you did a great great job! I wish the last mix had a little more bass overall (like the seperation but seems a little too much the bassier ones had a just a bit more warmth which I think this song just deserves the most thickness it can have ....How did you process the vocals?

That really blows CJ. You'd think everyone would be on top of a push to actually get the bass heard like an instrument in its own right.

Jauernis, I did a few things to the vocal. I can't remember the exact sequence but it was kind of like this:

Printed it through the Distressor with Dist 3 mode on.
Ran it through Decapitator with some heavy gain, blended it in parallel.
Used Waves C6 as a de-esser and low-end controller.
Used Waves SSL-chan as HPF
Used Millennia as EQ and compressor. Lots of high end, a bit of 1.6kHz, a large 300hz cut, a bit of low shelf cut. Compressor taking off about 3 or so only.
Rvox.
eQuality. Taking out some more junk that was left in the mic. Mostly in the low mids.
Waves L1.
1176 Rev A.
iZotope Trash. Tape saturation setting.

By the time I was done the music spill on the vocal was as loud as the vocal line itself, so I had to strip it.
