Heavy Ermz Mix

Yeah, I just spent the day mixing a vocal recorded in a much higher quality fashion than the one here, BUT it was WAY harder to mix and took a ton more processing.

Seriously, if there's a good voice behind that dynamic mic junk, you can uncover it. Ola's vocalist just eats babies.

wow, such mixed reactions.. get it!? mixed reactions? HAHAHAAAHAHA!!! ahum..

I love this mix man, i totally understand people not digging the bass that much, but i love that sound personally.. i guess it's a love it or hate it mix.. just like in flames's "reroute to remain".

Hey Ermz, vocal sounds awesome, bass volume is OK (not loud at all on the Mackies HR824 mk2 + subwoofer). But he guitars are really honky (maybe that 2k3hz someone complained about on a previous post) and the drums, specially the snare, could be louder/more in your face. I think bringing the drums up would make it a lot punchier, but that just imho.

Haha is that pop at the start for your comp? Vocals sound monstrous, toms sound like cannons, bass sounds kinda wide to me and perhaps the kick and snare could come up a touch for some more punch, but otherwise I think it rules.

Wow just following this thread.

love the way Ermz cocks it up a bit (I say coks it up but thhats better than I could do) then piles on that awesome mix at the end, that last mix really nails it.

I know when I like the mix cos I am not into that heavy screamy shit unless its well produced (Daylight Dies/Jens Bogren)

So I know when its good, when it sounds like that last mix.

Fantastic stuff!

So what did you do to the last mix that made it better, can I hear distortion on the drums?

Thanks guys! Yes I think the 2nd one is closer to the aim for a final. Since this isn't a 'proper mix' (ie. being paid for it) I'll never get a chance to finish it, but I think the 2nd one struck in the right direction. From there on I would commonly just brush off the rough edges. Spend a day or two refining the guitar tone and the low-end interaction of everything to make sure it's clean and there's enough headroom for Plec not to want to kill me when it comes time for the master.

@amarshism: You betcha! I'm not sure if it's as needed for the 2nd version, since the bus comp went down to only about 4dB reduction, but the rock stuff I've been mixing lately has been around 8dB, so I've started doing it as a habit.
