From Melodicrock.com This guys is a hardcore Van Halen fan & has some reliable sources. Check this one out:

EDDIE'S LIMP AUDITION - VAN BIZKIT TRY OUT DID HAPPEN:
In a feature article on the upcoming Limp Bizkit CD, MTV.com interviewed frontman Fred Durst about the band's need for a guitarist. The article reads: As Durst so eloquently puts it, "What the f--- am I doing? I'm not a guitar player." But after auditioning as many as 11 guitarists, including none other than Eddie Van Halen, the frontman finds himself, along with engineer Michael "Elvis" Baskette, strumming the songs for the new record. With live shows around the corner, that has to change."
Eddie Van Halen??? Well, my best placed source says yes, Eddie did audition - what was he thinking? But - a possible glimmer of light in the tunnel - apparently we will all know what's going on with Van Halen by the end of the year. I'll believe it when I see it, but here's hoping. It just continues to get stranger doesn't it? Stay tuned...

Un-fucking-believeable.
Granted, Wes Borland wasn't a bad guitar player (just in the wrong fucking band), and Eddie would probably bring some good riffs to LB, I still think that's just wrong. LB crashed and burned with Significant Other. 3 Dollar Bill wasn't too bad, but it was by no means good, either. If they could go back to playing something remotely good... then Eddie might be a real asset to the band, but if they're going to keep playing the same shit they've been playing recently, then Eddie will just be useless. I mean, LB has shown signs that they were once into something that could be remotely called metal (remember on 3 Dollar Bill... they stole part of a Suicidal Tendencies song?), but I just don't see them being anywhere near good in the foreseeable future. Seems to me they're destined to rot. And that suits me just fine.

Certainly says a lot for where Eddie's head is at right now, that he would audition to be in LB, don't ya think? (ew...)

I am absolutely speechless on this one. All I can say is, Ed needs to get back on drugs. Seriously. Sobriety has not done him well. I think he needs the coke and alcohol to level out his chemical imbalance or his severe mental retardation that probably occurred when he was hit in the face by a shovel, thus, his shaggy grill.
I'm so lonesome I could cry

Eddie is probably drinking again, how else would you explain this?!

He was probably just joking around.
At this point the Van Halens are a big joke & the laughing stock of the Hard Rock community. I mean even that fat bastard, Michael Anthony is out doing shows with Hagar & they got the side project with Neal Schon coming up early next year....
The Van Halens are just sitting at home being bitter about the stroke of luck they have had with their singers....
Who the hell thinks it's still all about the singers?!

It's bullshit.

At most, he might have hung out and watched the auditions (I bet Durst asked him to help judge the auditioning guitarists), but I refuse to believe that Eddie Van Halen (who is on par with Hendrix, Page etc) would try out for an MTV band.

Some reporter probably saw him go in and out, and assumed he was there to audition. Don't believe the hype.

I happen to think there's more truth to this than you think. But I wasn't there either. The fact is that Eddie
and his big bro are desperate to be in the spotlight, probably more than David Lee Roth & would do anything to get their name out in the press at this point.
I'm impressed with the class that Hagar & Anthony have shown over the last couple of years. They kick back don't bad mouth the "noses" & do their own thing. You've gotta given 'em credit for that.

Those who know me know I have a deep love for al things VH and DLR. I'm such a VH fan that I learned to like VH 3 with Cherone for the love of Pete. But this?!?!? I can't do it. I'm out. My only hope is that the guy who posted the story is wrong and that there's no truth to this. I know the MIGHTY SWINE is always 100% correct, but maybe this melodicrock dude got it wrong or made it up?!?! That's what I'm going to choose to believe. Just like I don't really believe that Rob Halford is gay...I'm still choosing to believe that that's just a rumor and that even when Rob admits it he's only joking.....denial ain't just a river in egypt!
