Hello, me again- question about microphones, etc...

Hiya Maidens. It's me, the dude who made the recent fem-Eddie paintings, Tom. I haven't been around in a while, but I poke in and lurk now and then. Still waiting to hear about you guys coming anywhere near my neck of the hemisphere. [EDIT: I see you're coming to NY. Blarghh... still too far away for me. Curses.]

Anyway- I've been shining my musical goodies up. By that I mean I've been practicing more at gee-tar and such, and also, I think I'm ready to bellow for a band. If I could find a nice 80's metal group around here willing to form a band, I'd be all set.

So. I'd like to know about microphones, if you've got a second. I'm looking at blowing maybe $200... can someone help me find a nice mic to grunt into, Bruce-style, or just hand out some tips? The guy at GuitarCenter said a bunch of stuff about... uh.. dynamic and compression (?) mics. I dunno. I have no footing here. Help?

If memory serves me, the pattern refers to what area the sound is picked up from most, figure 8, carioid, hyper-cardioid...

Dynamic and Condenser mics are the two main types. The Shure SM58 and SM58 Beta (Dynamic mics) are quite popular, especially for live applications. Definitely give those a try before you buy anything else. In addition to live vocal applications, they work pretty well to mic guitar cabinets with if you ever do any recording (I actually like the 58 better than the "old standard" SM57). My 2 cents. The Shure SM58 is great for vocal use, as is the SM58 Beta. Both have a high tolerance for abuse and can also withstand relatively high volume vocal levels (the SM58 is the only microphone I've tried for stage use that doesn't distort when I use it in studio comparison). You may also want to try out a hand-held condensor microphone. They deliver a better sound with a crisper high end than a dynamic (i.e. Shure SM 58) microphone, but they're also much more fragile and should be handled carefully.

I would recommend getting an SM-58 on sale. That's what I'm using there. They have always been the standard vocal mic. When I started Wrathchild I let an overzealous kid talk me into getting a "newer mic" with all these features and while yes it has a higher end and more punch it feeds back alot so i prefer the 58, using this other thing as my back up...It's an AKG D790 which I'd recommend in an acoustic setting. I know the dip shit who sold it to me had no clue what I'd be singing.

Every performing musician should have at least one SM-58. They are great....and last eventhough mine broke on tour...:0( I give it a lot of abuse.


Get the 58, get used to that and then compare other mics off that. They've been making them forever which means they are doing something rignt since it's still the mic of choice for both.
