Hey guys!

First off, I've done some recordings before, but i never really was satisfied with my amp sound. So i started looking around the interwebs and i thought that AcmebarGig sounds amazing! But here's the noob part, i cant get it to sound great!

I dont know what the heck im dealing with here, and every amp sim sound like its only the preamp (Which fucking sucks!)

Here is my setup:

Dean Razorback V-255 Explosion
Cubase 5.1
Gearbox
And loads of VSTs i dont know what to do with!

So could someone do a very detailed guide (Hopefully with pictures?) so I can learn how to make those awesome guitar tones :)?

Oh also, im trying to make drums using the drum map, but that shit is hard as well!

Sorry for being a noob, and i hope you guys wanna help me :)

I know this won't satisfy your question if you have already decided to take the amp sim route, but I'd really like to recommend you to keep on micing a real amp. It takes shitloads of practice (and a decent amp, cab and mic) to get it sound awesome, but it's a very gratifying learning process! :)

If you're determined you don't want to do that, then I'd suggest you do a search on this forum about impulses. There's already a shit-ton of information on this subject here, and none of it can exactly be covered in a step-by-step "do this, click here, turn this knob halfway up" tutorial. A good tone depends on a load of variables, starting from your fingers.

Thanks for the quick answer Jarkko :D

But yeah, i dont have the money to mic up a real amp, plus my amp is out in the band practice room :)

But yeah, ive read something about the impulse, and i used keFir or something like that, where you have to select an .wav file, but it doesnt even load correctly, because i would believe that it should pop up as a wave file right? well i cant see any waves :)

I will take a look at some of the tutorials :)

Well, basically you load an ampsim that hasn't got any sort of cabinet emulation turned on, then put a plugin such as KeFIR, download some impulses (such as these: http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum/andy-sneap/486916-new-fredman-style-awesometime-impulses.html), load one of the impulses in KeFIR, turn the mix knob all the way up so there's no dry signal blended in, and voila.

No I'm danish, but i can understand a little bit norwegian :)

Btw, if any of you guys are interrested, you can try and make my tone better by using teamviewer, that lets you control my pc :)?

You can do it simpler though, just post the DI track ;)

The clip sounds like it's clipping really hard, you might wanna check your in or outputs. It might be the clipping but it sounds like your impulse settings aren't 100% wet

I'm by no means a pro, but this sounds pretty good to my ears: http://www.sendspace.com/file/2d7kiv

Two suggestions based on your DI sample:

1. The power chord section sounded a bit out of tune to me. Might want to retune and/or check the intonation on your guitar.

2. Work on your palm mutes. They weren't bad, but they were sloppy enough that I had to turn the amp gain down or they'd get completely washed out.

As for the signal itself, sounded fine to me.

The chain I used was:

LePou's SoloC Preamp - Clean channel, Input and Master at 2, Mids cranked.
Nick Crow 8505 - Everything at 7, Master at 3.
KeFir - One of Catharsis' Awesometime Fredman impulses, s_preshigh.
Bootsy's BootEQMkII, using the "Basic Smile" preset.

Like I said, I'm not saying it's an awesome tone, but I'd be happy to work with it.

Regarding your earlier sample, I can hear a pretty good tone going on. You just need to turn down the bass and turn down the volume. :)

Here's my try. A little tip. Next time submit your DI as a WAV file, 24-bits, 44100, MONO.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1643345/zz99 - Misc Shit/le456.mp3

Chain is:
1) TSS: drive 1, tone 5, level 10
2) Lepou Le456 - low gain channel: input almost to the max, drive 6, low 3, middle 4/4.5, high 6.5/7, contour 6.5/7, bright switch enabled, volume 6.5/7
3) Lecab: A mix of: Red Wire - Mesa rectifier far field cap on 0in + Recabinet Mesa 6l6 57 edge 0,5
4) EQ:
--- HP: 80
--- -3dB: 500 (q= 13)
--- -5dB: 1000 (q= 30)
--- -2dB: 2800 (q= 25)
--- +5dB: 6000 (q=20)
--- LP: 10500

heres a sample.

And what does moniter equipment means? im a noob sorry
About this: high-pass/low-pass it if you haven't done so, lower the bass knob, watch the meters because it is clipping a lot

Also remember that your guitar tone has to sound good in a mix. I've on many occasions thought I had really improved a tone all by itself only to find that it was not sitting well in a mix. I always tend to work a small mix with each tone I'm experimenting with. I use a few drum clips and a bass loop to try it out as a quick test. I also tend to find that all by itself I tend to over-gain most Amp Sims without trying them in a mix.

Yeah, and also don't forget that the bass plays an important role, so your tone doesn't have to be too bassy. When I started trying to dial a tone I would listen to it by it self and get it really bassy because it sounded "thin", after reading more in this forum I realized that fullness of a tone is completed when you add the bass. Anyway, I still haven't find a good tone, but I think I am a little more oriented compared to some months ago

Its a pretty cool sound you got on this dude's DI track dude! Can you get a tone like you did on that short clip using ryan's s-preshigh impulse? Its just I like this sound but don't own Recabinet or any of the Redwire impulses :(
