Help me choose a new bass (2 options)

Can you scrape up another $100? I have the Brice HXB and every one that's touched it so far has been amazed it was only $280.

Out of those 2, I'd take the jazz knockoff.

The limitations at that price will be the B string, and the pickups...you'll have to try them to be sure.

If you're after that pick with grit sound, look for a Precision copy, or with the Precision pickup config...it rules for that particular sound (eg Helmet). Pretty awesome for fingers and slap too, most basses only do 2 out of 3 well. The Jazz config ain't bad for pick, but the P-bass is thicker/better imo.

You can always throw a B string on a 4 if you're cash challenged, better a Bstring on a good sounding bass than a shitty sounding 5. A pickup swap is the cheapest upgrade.

You can usually find a pre-2010 Precision Deluxe on Talkbass for around $800-850, those are lighter than a guitar and sound bullshit. Prob too much right? But surely there's a P knockoff around your pricepoint (not very versed in American budget axes sorry).

In my experience, the low B on the 34" SX basses is very loose and farty and basically just blows. Beware.

Hmmm.... i was afraid of that dammit. The Douglas is 34" scale too. Shit.

Thanks for the info B. and welcome to the forums. (not as kind a place as the REAPER forums mind you, but tons of valuable info to be had.)

Cheers man, I'm a long time lurker here actually, it's definitely an interesting community. :)

You might want to keep tabs on the talkbass classifieds, usually it's over your price point, but there's the occasional secondhand budget model. I got my Deluxe off a dude on there (you can check their feedback to see if they're legit, mostly they are). Here's one I stumbled over that's 35":

Honestly, just save up a bit more man.
The one inch difference in scale makes a very big difference to how the low B string sounds.
It might not matter much if you're just getting it to play with at home and jam with your friends, but once you record it, the difference between a 34 and 35 inch scale bass on the low B string becomes apparent really quickly in a heavy rock/metal setting (unless it's stoner metal, then it wont matter as much haha)
I wouldn't go any lower than C on a 34 inch scale bass, and even that is stretching it.
The 35 inch scale makes the low B tighter and more articulate.
