Hey everyone, here is a clip from a song I'm working on. It's not metal at all, but I think it's still a pretty cool tune. Anyway, I've always been especially bad at mixing bass. I can just never seem to get good at it. I feel like the bass doesn't have enough clarity. It just seems muddy and undefined. Currently I've got a clean DI track that's low-passed, and then I have a copy of the track that's high-passed and has a bit of distortion on it. Both are compressed and EQ'd individually. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone would be willing to take a listen and tell me what they think and how I can possibly improve it. It would be greatly appreciated.

Btw, try not to pay much attention to the drums. I know they're pretty buried, they're all one submix for right now and I'm not focusing on them yet. I think I'm pretty decent at mixing drums though. Also, the guitar will be doubled, but right now there is just one track and it's up the center. I have it up the center because I'm trying to focus on getting it to jive with the bass before I start panning things around.

ever tried to just copy the different elements of the album?

try to match the bass tone they have as closely as possible, and do the same for the guitars

Try to find bass only and guitar only segments on the album and try to match them...

kinda like using a template

i have a lot of trouble mixing bass too...but i find that this helps

Hmm, well it's not that I'm purposely trying to make it sound EXACTLY like the album. It just seems like the nature of the song and the sounds that I'm already getting are similar enough to that album that I picture the whole mix inevitably sounding pretty similiar (or at least, that's the intent). Good idea though, thanks.
