help on getting a nice vocal sound

one thing that my recordings seem to lack is a nice "personal" vocal mix. The kind of vocal production I like is soundgarden, Machinehead...where the screams can sound big and the lighter moments sound "warm and in the room"..

I am sure it's alot of eq, compression, and maybe verb and delay but I need a good starting point...also I do not have any over the top awesome mics or pre ( a great cad equteck is about my best vocal mic)
