HELP!! QUESTION!! Drum Triggers

So my band just recorded with Joey Sturgis, and he used mics AND triggers on our drums. I like the idea a LOT, but I didn't see him using a midi converter for the triggers. Which brings me to my questions.

Can you run drum triggers directly into a preamp? And what comes through?

I hope this isn't totally n00bish, but I've just wondered for SO long if you could. Thanks guys!

Yup.
They kinda sound like little thuds. Useful for sidechain noise gates or sound replacing since there's practically no bleed so makes transient detection a snap.
