guess what the problem is? that's right, hiss!

so not to ramble too much signal chain is:
Jackson(w/EMG-hz) ---> ART DI(brand new) ---> MOTU travelr ---> Poulin pre-amp ---> Ozone 5

basically, the amount of hiss is quiet enough so when i play or when i run the signal through a spectrum analyzer when not playing it shows no signal is coming through, which is good.
the hiss start to appear only after the ozone kicks in and compresses the fuck of the signal.
iv'e tried EQing the problematic frequencies out and it obviously works, but then i lose all presence and the tone sounds like shit.

i have no idea how to get rid of that fucking hiss! any suggestions?

If i were you, i would put a noise gate in front of Ozone or before the preamp, if Ozone wants to compress your silence so much, it will fail with digital silence.

Or fiddle with the compressor settings and check the loudness maximizer tab.

i have tought about that, or maybe buying a gate and placing it in front of the MOTU or the DI box.
but the hiss appears when i'm playing as well, so a gate would be pointless

alright this is freaky!
the cause for the hiss has nothing to do with the tracks themselves, this even when the song doesn't play ozone makes that noise when i crack up the loudness.
the freaky thing is, on another project it works just fine! what the hell????

You have any instances of The CLA 1176 anywhere in the mix? I was bouncing stuff down for a hip hop album I am mixing for a friend and any song with tracks running 1176 with the analog switch kicked on would have an absurd amount of hiss once it went through limiting in mastering. I turned the analog mode off and no hiss. Just a heads up.

alrghit

iv'e got a new pre-amp and cranked the noise way up so i can hear it clearly. guess what? besides a shit-load of hiss i could vaguely hear a radio signal coming through!
which leads me to think im dealing with a ground loop problem here...
iv'e read a lot about that sort of shit but never actually had to deal with that problem, so can anyone elaborate on how he grounded his studio? pics are more than welcome!
one thing tough, i live on the 6th floor and have no way to actually reach the ground itself. will have to buy a device that checks ground for that, but that's not a solution...
